Influences
My life and musical experiences from South Boston to West Cork to Los Angeles and back again to where it all began.
(A personal message from Bob)... "I was born in South Boston, "The
Irish Riviera", for generations the most Irish of Irish-American
neighborhoods, and a great place to grow up surrounded by reels and
jigs, rocks and rolls, swings and beats, and songs and music of all
kinds. Conveniently located half way (geographically, historically, and
culturally) between the other two places I think of as home, Los
Angeles and West Cork. Most of what has inspired, nourished, and
encour`aged me in this life comes from these three spots, and the people
and music I've been lucky enough to know there."
Bob, in his early career was a founding member of popular local bands, The Boston Mass, Hummit and Newsboy. He has worked as a
guitarist, singer, and songwriter in both the U.S. and Ireland,
performed and recorded with such artists as Delaney Bramlett, Dillon
O'Brien, Metropolitan Opera award winner Dennis McNeil, "Titanic" trad
band Gaelic Storm, and was lead guitarist for Los Angeles premier
Irish band, The Twilight Lords, for eight years. He has done numerous
theatre productions at the Celtic Arts Center in Hollywood and did a
weekly ten-minute spot for Irish Radio from L.A.
While living in
Ireland, "Boston Bob" spent a year touring with bass player and rock
legend Noel Redding of Jimi Hendrix Experience fame and developed an
increasing love for Irish tunes and ballads that he brought with him to
Los Angeles. Hosting a weekly session at the Celtic Arts Center on
Hollywood Boulevard, Robert Emmet's Flying Circus, he juggled
everything from jazz standards to blues, Irish, Scottish, and American
folk songs, Show tunes, Opera singers, and the International Celtic
Samba Band.
Bob is an accomplished songwriter, and recently released his CD "Notes from Home." His song "Mick Ryan's Lament" is being performed in many corners of the world and has been
recorded by several artists, including Dillon O'Brian, Ken O'Malley, bluegrass
legend Tim O'Brien and world renowned fiddler Kevin Burke with Ged
Foley.
Bob's partner, Kathi Taylor (drums, percussion, vocals),
has roots in the midwest, New
England and California. As a member of several bands
and as a freelance musician in Los Angeles, and now, in Boston, she has
played a variety of musical styles - rock, blues, Cajun, Zydeco,
country, jazz and Irish. Some of the L.A. bands she played with
include The Mustangs, Way Out West, The Zydecats, and with legendary
Cajun accordionist Joe Simien. In addition to Kathi and Bob's projects,
she is an in-demand drummer on the Somerville, MA roots music scene,
both live and in the studio. During her career, she has toured Europe
and the southwest, performed in Vegas, on network TV, and played for
the crowned heads of Nashville. She received a degree in drums and percussion from
the Grove School of Music in Los Angeles. Kathi is also an accomplished fine artist. You can check out her art at www.kathitaylor.com.
Since their move to Boston, Bob and Kathi
have been involved with various bands. They currently play with Orpheus
Reborn, which includes four of the original members of the
legendary 60's Boston band, Orpheus, who had the classic hit "Can't
Find the
Time." They are founding members of two other popular, local bands -
Slocum's Window and Hogan's Goat. Slocum's Window is an eclectic trio
(with bass player Ken McLeod), that plays rock and roll, blues,
country, some jazz standards and a little Irish on the side. Hogan's
Goat is a "South Boston Irish" band (with Skip Toomey on accordion,
whistle and banjo) that plays traditional Irish tunes and sings Irish
and American folk songs and sea shanties. Bob and Kathi are also busy
in the studio working on the next Robert Emmet Dunlap CD.
If you ever make the
journey to Ireland, please make it a point to visit "Shanley's Bar" in Clonakilty, West Cork. Tell them "Boston Bob"
sent you, enjoy a "pint," some great music, and meet some people who
will become your friends forever.
Robert, welcome to The Generation of Peace, Love and Rock 'n' Roll. We appreciate the add and hope you'll stop by and let us know what you think of the music.
