  • Books

The first books I remember reading (after Green Eggs and Ham and the Dick and Jane series in grade school) were by authors such as:
    Isaac Asimov
    Ray Bradbury
    Robert Heinlein
    Arthur C. Clarke
They introduced me to worlds undreamt of, from as far away as a distant galaxy to as near as inside my head. Books I've read time and time again include:
    Foundation
    Foundation and Empire
    Second Foundation
    Revelation
    (from the Bible).
The first "literary" book as child that affected me was Berries Goodman.

I also went through a Louis L'Amour cowboy story period, and I disappeared into the world of Dances With Wolves before the movie came out.

After a long hiatus from book reading called the 1970s, I picked up some Christian thrillers in the late 80s by Frank Peretti. Piercing the Darkness and This Present Darkness set my soul to wondering why I stopped reading for that decade.

Somewhere along the way, I found:
    Dean Koontz
    Harlen Coben
    F. Paul Wilson
    James Patterson
    JA Konrath
    Clive Cussler
    John Sandford

And let me not forget myself. After many years of writing news, features, columns, homework, and letters, I applied fingers to keyboard and wrote a suspense thriller that won a contest held by ArcheBooks Publishing. That monumental novel was Thrips, which saw life as a $27 hardcover book in 2004 and 2005. Lots of people liked it, but not a lot of people bought it, so I regained the rights, rewrote it, and self-published it available as the $6.99 trade paperback THRIPZ. Now, it's taking off like a banana that's been stepped on by a pack of hungry monkeys being chased out of a mud hole by a herd of fruit-crazed hogs. Serious suspense-thriller reviewers, email me about getting a copy to review. And everyone else, subscribe to my newsletter. It's easy to do, and when I get off my butt and send one out, it's generally a little bit of fun, informative, and will make you rich beyond your wildest dreams.

    Real Readers Reminisce
Here are a few comments from some real life MySpace friends, none of whom has been paid to say anything, but have said something anyway (and I hope they don't mind if I reprint some of their words here--if so, let me know and I'll send you the $5 I promised). (Kidding. I don't have $5. Kidding. I do, but I didn't promise to send it.)

ROBERT!!! Loved the book, Brother. I really appreciate how cool you've been to me and it makes me feel great that people are connecting with the book and the tune. We have to team up on your next one too!!
    Elliot Matsu

I finally finished reading Thripz, No fair making me lose sleep. but it was worth it. Can't wait for the next one Robert. Much success and sunshine...
    Annette

Dear Bob, Wouldn't you know it? I was right! I DID have a dream about pregnant mutant killer insects. Can I help that I sat down to read THRIPZ in the early evening, then found myself a little more than halfway finished, just before bedtime? Of course, a LATER-than-normal bedtime. (Is that an 'extranormal' bedtime?) At once, upon reading page one, I was transported. You've got my heart-a-racin' and I don't wanna "wake up" too soon! (You write soo naturally, with the flow of the best action movies.) What a KILLER~THRILLER you've created!! And since I can't seem to stop the inevitable finish line (page) today...I best make sure it's not TOO close to my sleepytime, LOL Just wanted to tell ya WOW and say thanks again for the nightmares :O)
    Sherrie

Love your new default pic!!! Just like I loved your book Thripz!!! Hey peeps....if you haven't purchased a copy yet - get busy with that online order!!! You won't regret it!
    Sherri

Just have to let you know that my friend is already enjoying Thripz as she is traveling by RV to FL!! Just heard from her today, and she had to tell me FIRST how she is LOVING the book!! I'll soon be getting started on my copy!!
    PattiAnn

Just finished Thripz...well done haole. Book looks good too ie. cover and print, not bad for who published it. Thanks for all the advice, I'm still getting all my stories edited but I showed Thripz to a friend (nitromistress) who was overjoyed to find an inexpensive way of doing it while getting a nice product.
    Gwyn

Thripz review: I finished Thripz and I loved it! The story grabbed me right from the start and took me on a whirlwind tour of Hawaiian culture and a mystery as well! Nathan Brewster, the main character so to speak, give the story the fire and the pace and you find yourself rooting for him at every turn. Something like this might be possible one day and it does make you think about bugs and the environment in a new way. The plot of the book was a little creepy but not on a grotesque scale. It was a mild thriller with no cursing or sex! So that was a huge plus with me! Thank you, Robert! I hope you will keep writing and give us more fun in your next adventure! Best of luck, Robert, with your future as an author.

About me:

I am a guitar-playing, editing, writing stay-at-home dad and the writer of the suspense thriller:
THRIPZ:
which horror/mystery/thriller novelist J.A. Konrath called:

'a techno-thriller with teeth'

What Is THRIPZ About?
NATHAN BREWSTER, a reporter with an extranormal sense for trouble, finds more than he bargained for when an unhinged bioterrorist unleashes poisonous insect pests on Hawaii. NATHAN must overcome personal demons and regain his reporting chops to stop the mutant horde before the bad guy kills him, his new friend, his potential new girlfriend, and anyone left on the island. It's going to take science, the military, and Mother Nature to stop this menace--and one more thing that nobody knew about.

Writer Folk Say This About THRIPZ
(See sidebar for what real people say)

J.A. Konrath, author of Bloody Mary says:
Farley has written a techno-thriller with teeth! Part rollicking adventure, part mutant insect mayhem, THRIPZ will make your heart race and your skin crawl. Robert Farley is a writer to watch."

Lisette Brodey, author of Crooked Moon says:
THRIPZ, a gripping thriller, pulls you in from the first sentence and never lets go. With deft precision, Robert Farley's novel about mutant killer thrips is so believable that you may never look at any bug the same way again. Set in Hawaii's Waikiki in Oahu, the author's firsthand familiarity with the island and knowledge of what he writes make this thriller just that much more powerful. THRIPZ is a stunning read that will stay with you long after you close the book.

Sara Williams, author of The Don Juan Con.. says:
Mutant thrips might be the bio-bugs in question, but Farley’s plot is as tangled as any web some mad scientist might weave. Here’s a fresh blend of science with mystery that belongs on my bookshelf next to my classic favorites of the genre: Jaws and Jurassic Park."

S.J. Reisner, author of Left Horse Black says:
Robert Farley's THRIPZ is a terrifying and realistic bio-terrorism thriller that will keep you riveted to your chair armed with a flyswatter, bug spray, and a new outlook on even the most common insect.

Jake George, author of Grandfather's Song says:
Robert Farley took what appeared to be a routine bug infestation and turned it into a tale of international intrigue. Spies, bio-terrorists, and a top- notch plot will take the reader on a ride on the dark side of bioengineering in a well-paced and action-packed novel.
