The first books I remember reading (after Green Eggs and Ham and the Dick and Jane series in grade school) were by authors such as:
Isaac Asimov
Ray Bradbury
Robert Heinlein
Arthur C. Clarke
They introduced me to worlds undreamt of, from as far away as a distant galaxy to as near as inside my head. Books I've read time and time again include:
Foundation
Foundation and Empire
Second Foundation
Revelation (from the Bible).
The first "literary" book as child that affected me was
Berries Goodman.
I also went through a Louis L'Amour cowboy story period, and I disappeared into the world of Dances With Wolves before the movie came out.
After a long hiatus from book reading called the 1970s, I picked up some Christian thrillers in the late 80s by
Frank Peretti.
Piercing the Darkness and
This Present Darkness set my soul to wondering why I stopped reading for that decade.
Somewhere along the way, I found:
Dean Koontz Harlen Coben F. Paul Wilson
James Patterson
JA Konrath
Clive Cussler
John Sandford
And let me not forget myself. After many years of writing news, features, columns, homework, and letters, I applied fingers to keyboard and wrote a suspense thriller that won a contest held by ArcheBooks Publishing. That monumental novel was
Thrips, which saw life as a $27 hardcover book in 2004 and 2005. Lots of people liked it, but not a lot of people bought it, so I regained the rights, rewrote it, and self-published it available as the $6.99 trade paperback
THRIPZ. Now, it's taking off like a banana that's been stepped on by a pack of hungry monkeys being chased out of a mud hole by a herd of fruit-crazed hogs. Serious suspense-thriller reviewers, email me about getting a copy to review. And everyone else, subscribe to my newsletter. It's easy to do, and when I get off my butt and send one out, it's generally a little bit of fun, informative, and will make you
rich beyond your wildest dreams.
Real Readers Reminisce
Here are a few comments from some real life MySpace friends, none of whom has been paid to say anything, but have said something anyway (and I hope they don't mind if I reprint some of their words here--if so, let me know and I'll send you the $5 I promised). (Kidding. I don't have $5. Kidding. I do, but I didn't promise to send it.)
ROBERT!!! Loved the book, Brother. I really appreciate how cool you've been to me and it makes me feel great that people are connecting with the book and the tune. We have to team up on your next one too!!

I finally finished reading Thripz, No fair making me lose sleep. but it was worth it. Can't wait for the next one Robert. Much success and sunshine...

Dear Bob,
Wouldn't you know it? I was right! I DID have a dream about pregnant mutant killer insects. Can I help that I sat down to read THRIPZ in the early evening, then found myself a little more than halfway finished, just before bedtime? Of course, a LATER-than-normal bedtime. (Is that an 'extranormal' bedtime?)
At once, upon reading page one, I was transported. You've got my heart-a-racin' and I don't wanna "wake up" too soon! (You write soo naturally, with the flow of the best action movies.) What a KILLER~THRILLER you've created!! And since I can't seem to stop the inevitable finish line (page) today...I best make sure it's not TOO close to my sleepytime, LOL
Just wanted to tell ya WOW and say thanks again for the nightmares :O)
Sherrie

Just finished Thripz...well done haole. Book looks good too ie. cover and print, not bad for who published it. Thanks for all the advice, I'm still getting all my stories edited but I showed Thripz to a friend (nitromistress) who was overjoyed to find an inexpensive way of doing it while getting a nice product.

Thripz review: I finished Thripz and I loved it! The story grabbed me right from the start and took me on a whirlwind tour of Hawaiian culture and a mystery as well! Nathan Brewster, the main character so to speak, give the story the fire and the pace and you find yourself rooting for him at every turn. Something like this might be possible one day and it does make you think about bugs and the environment in a new way. The plot of the book was a little creepy but not on a grotesque scale. It was a mild thriller with no cursing or sex! So that was a huge plus with me! Thank you, Robert!
I hope you will keep writing and give us more fun in your next adventure! Best of luck, Robert, with your future as an author.
