About me:

Roberto Duarte. Visual Artist. Since the 90s I´ve worked basically with Photo and Video, as well in Sound, Performance and Site Specific Projects; most in collaboration with other Artists, Musicians, Theater Directors and Choreographers. My work has been exhibited in Chile, Argentina, México, USA, Spain and Germany. By the moment I turn the face to work by chance, with ephemeral encounters, finding a path through improvisation.

The group exhibition Nomadic Settlers – Settled Nomads is part of a research on contemporary nomadism, dealing with the complex theme of the human sense of settlement and its manifold facets. The concept of nomadism, migration, settlement will be perceived in a meta-level ranging from the physical to the imaginary, existence and non-existence, still with both feet on the ground. This project is intended to take place in various countries and continents, in the course of time; whereby the temporal and local differences offer the opportunity of a scene change which enables new perspectives on the subject. Thus, raised questions can be picked up again, and be thought about anew. Invited are young international artists to contribute fulminant impulses and perspectives. A process of communication between artists and art works, between own and foreign, between old and new is instigated, in which the visitors of the exhibition actively take part and become part of a circumstance.

SanctionedArray is an online database of video art conceived in response to the restrictions of artists’ submissions to The Guggenheim Museum’s and YouTube’s video biennial, Play (www.youtube.com/play). Artists’ submissions to Play are limited by OFAC sanctions (www.ustreas.gov/offices/enforcement/ofac/programs/) — where citizens or residents of Belarus, Cote d’Ivoire, Congo, Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, North Korea, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Myanmar/Burma, and Zimbabwe are not eligible to submit their work. We maintain that the application of these OFAC sanctions to virtual transmissions of video art perpetuates the causes that led to the imposition of them; and we invite those who wish to protest the continuity of such restrictions — artists of any origin, including those from the sanctioned countries — to submit their work to SanctionedArray.

SanctionedArray’s selected video entries shall also be launched at the screening event on October 25th, 2010 at The Big Screen Project and on October 26th, 2010 at WHITE BOX in New York City. This event shall coincide with the Play biennial at The Guggenheim New York, extending representation of video entries considered not eligible by Origin, by YouTube and The Guggenheim, “challenging a status quo,” as proposed by Nancy Spector, Deputy Director and Chief Curator, The Guggenheim.
