Sounds Like
The "blues, folk, rock acoustic sound" the Rolling Stones created in "Beggar's Banquet" and the raw "real sound" from the Rick Rubin produced "American Recordings" by the late great Johnny Cash.
Portland native Robert Richter began teaching himself guitar at the age of 12 when he purchased a Sears "Silvertone" guitar from a neighbor for $5 and the promise to mow his lawn for a month. (He still has the guitar) Over the years Richter has become known as a versatile guitarist and songwriter known for his ability to perform a variety of styles from acoustic to electric to blues to folk. His skilled and emotional slide guitar playing often works his audiences into frenzy.
With a strong powerful voice, Richter is electrifying with his energy, enthusiasm, sense of humor and most of all his innate ability to "connect with people." His original songs range from the uptempo rock-a-billy blues style originated at the legendary Sun Records Studio in Memphis to Dylan influenced songs about life and love.
Violinist Jessica Hitchborn is an energetic player whose style and energy provides the perfect complement to Richter's songwriting and guitar and vocal arrangements. Hitchborn won back to back Oregon State Fiddling titles and competed at the nationals held in Weizer, Idaho. The two also perform Celtic music as well.
Reviews:
"Robert Richter is a charismatic entertainer that gives it his all every time he performs. He not only pours everything into his songs but he also plays a mean slide guitar." Morry Feldman, WQED-FM Pittsburgh, PA.
"Robert's original songs hold your attention with thought provoking lyrics and music to match." Wayne Hudson, freelance music writer, Phoenix, Arizona
"Robert is a performer that lays it all out there wearing not only his heart on his sleeve but his soul. Alan Larson, musician, San Francisco
In 2007 as a member of the folk rock band "Blue Lightning" Richter performed on the nationally syndicated program "River City Folk." Hosted by folk singer Tom May the program is carried on more than 250 public radio stations and NPR affiliates across the United States. In addition, the band's music was played on the "Bob Dylan Radio Hour" heard on the Sirius Satellite Network and on KUSF-FM in San Francisco.
Richter has performed locally at Portland's Aladdin Theater and Waterfront Park and other well known venues and festivals and has taken his solo show on the road to San Francisco, Seattle and Phoenix and will be performing on the east coast in 2009.
His new EP "Live" displays what Richter calls "a dirty folk rock blues sound" fueled with fire and emotion both lyrically and musically. "If I don't believe it I can't sing it or play it!" says Richter.
That "Pass the Mic" show last night was unreal! Great bands. School of Rocks "Highway Star" was the coolest thing I've seen in ages. When this starts back up in the fall I'd encourage everyone to check it out. Good works!
