HERE'S AN EXCERPT:
Gulping air in my flight through the ruins had caused a painful stitch in my side. I paused, leaning against one of the menhirs. Took some deep yoga breaths. Tried to get my bearings. Feeling a tad calmer, I resumed my search for escape when, out of nowhere, a hand snagged the waistband of my pants and an arm encircled my throat. The fine hair on my arms and the back of my neck stood at attention. I sagged against my captor’s body. The moment I’d been dreading had finally happened. Both terror and a fatalistic relief coursed through my veins.
“You search for me?” my assailant whispered.
I’d know that accent anywhere, but I didn’t know whether to kick him or kiss him.
“Jesus, Jean-Loup, you scared the hell out of me! Where have you been?”
“I wait you return to the car, but when you do not return, I think you se perdre.
“So you rescued me.”
“What is my choose?”
“You could have left me here.”
“But then I cannot enjoy my dinner because I must be worry about you.”
Back in the car, I told him that I still wanted to be buried at Carnac . After starting the engine, The Wolf looked at me and said that if he didn’t get something to eat immediately, he’d happily fulfill my request.
