Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, and Jeff Beck were big influences on me when I was learning my way around a guitar. I also like Eric Johnson very much. He is probably the most rounded guitarist I've ever heard. Also, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Billy Gibbons were influences. I also am a fan of guitarists like Stewart Smith (Rodney Crowell, Shawn Colvin, Eagles), Mike Campbell who plays with Tom Petty and John Leventhal (produced and played guitar on Shawn Colvin's album with "Sunny Came Home" on it.) I really like the creativity aspect of the way those guys approach guitar playing. Another guitarist I recently discovered that I like very much is Wayne Krantz and I should not forget Alan Holdsworth. Songwriting influences would have to begin with The Beatles, Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, Willie Nelson, Karla Bonoff, Mindy Smith, Patty Griffin, my adopted Canadian son Joshua Bartholomew, my son Chris Paul Overall and my daughter Sara Overall and I'm sure hundreds more if I thought about it long enough.

I am extremely passionate about love, art and music...(especially love and music). I am a believer in working hard for the things that you want and I think good things seem to happen with that mindset. I love my family and my friends very much and I hope after I am gone none of them will wonder about it so I hope I am doing a good job of showing it now. I think the music biz is the most screwed up biz on the planet but I don't play cuz I want to be in the biz. I play because I must play....it is in me and it's all about the music.
The following bio had to be written by somebody cuz if it were up to me I'd just say "Howdy!...I'm Robin and I play guitar."
What is it about growing up in the Texas music scene that inspires so many guitar players to wield their guitars like weapons and make an impact on the world? Guitarists like Billy Gibbons of ZZ Topp, Eric Johnson and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Maybe it is something in the water or in the air that evokes such legendary feel for the instrument. Whatever the reason, the list would not be complete without Robin Overalls name on it. Described by Music Columnist Jim Beal as Guitar Slinger Deluxe, Robin is emerging as a force to be reckoned with set apart from the hordes of SRV clones by a style all his own. This Texas born guitarist is poised for a 2010 Tour to support the release of his upcoming album 'Firebird'. Robin's first album 'Shadowlands' is an amazing journey of guitar laced rock lightly seasoned with a jazz/fusion edge and has been a good introduction for Robin to fans world wide. The live performance is really where he catches fire and you begin to understand that you are witnessing something very special. His soaring guitar solos seem to actually be calling out to people from blocks away to come and experience it. But the thing I enjoyed most about this guitarist was his commitment to the song. He is actually a good songwriter and vocalist. I never got the feeling that the evening was centered around a guitar showcase of endless and ultimately boring scales or that the songs were constructed solely for that purpose. Robin has a way of pulling you in slowly with variety, taste, and feel. He doesnt dump his complete knowledge of the guitar on you in the first solo in the first song. He is more like a Pied Piper slowly weaving his way through the songs and although he does give you an occasional blistering flurry of notes you really get a sense of freshness from song to song. At the end of the performance you wont have the ear fatigue common in many guitar hero shows. After two encores and non-stop accolades from the audience of about 300 people for this opening act I began to ask myself..Whos the headliner now?
If you get a chance to see Robin live dont miss it..this Firebird can really rock you!
Commentary: Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix were the whole reason I wanted to play guitar and I guess in some way I’m still looking for that finite signature style that might separate me from other guitarists. I remember being in my room for days only coming out for food picking out the “live” portion of the Cream ‘Wheels Of Fire’ album and trying to get it not only note for note but the inflections as well. I think my approach to guitar is forged in these early records but I’m trying to update the sound while still retaining the raw power and fiery underbelly that the spirit of this music had. I soon realized that there was a Blues generation or two before these guys that had inspired them so I listened to John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, B.B. King and Albert King to get the history straight. I just love some of these younger guitarists who are trying (to whatever extent) to keep the old ways alive like John Mayer, Jonny Lang and especially Joe Bonamassa who really seems to understand that there needs to be a carrying on of the torch but we need to update it as well. I also wouldn’t want to leave out fellow Austinites Charlie Sexton and Doyle Bramhall II and their important contributions. These are guys I consider to be “The Real Deal”. The Blues from the 1930’s is wonderful but you are going to have a hard time selling that to young people today. I was really worried during the late 1980’s and into the 1990’s when it seemed as if all the young newcomer guitarists put all their effort into power chords and forgot to learn anything about the art of playing lead guitar. When you did hear a solo it was a painful struggle and usually sounded like “ass”. So it’s like….let’s learn what was good about the old ways and update it somewhat. More than that I think it takes real talent to play like Joe and I think people get that now. We live in an age where everybody plays guitar and anybody and everybody can make a CD on their own. All you need is a computer and the right software. I’m always excited to hear bands (especially youth) that have made the commitment to really learn to play their instruments.
