AS NOVAS AVENTURAS DO ROBÔ GIGANTE (por Jimi Joe - inverno/2007)
Não é desenho animado japonês, mas que tem alguma coisa de oriental nisso tudo, não há como negar. Prova disso é o resultado das novas aventuras sonoras do povo da Robô Gigante. É um samba enviesado com cara de rock. Ou talvez um rock descarado com jeito de samba do bom, aquele com pandeiro e cavaquinho. Mas a galera da Robô Gigante vai muito além disso nas canções que desfia nesse trabalho. As guitarras de Marcelo Truda, um dos guitar heros gaúchos que na verdade podia pertencer à uma seleta league of gentlemen bolada por um tal Robert Fripp lá do outro lado do Atlântico, dão o timbre de rock no papo da Robô Gigante, mas os versos do outro Marcelo, o Guimarães, o da voz e dos versos, fazem a reviravolta da parada, citando Lupicínio, remetendo a Paulinho da Viola na sua fase de modernização do samba. Uma voz que canta samba mas soa como rock. Um rock que soa como samba mas não perde o pathos típico do rock. E talvez porque, como já apregoou o velho pândego Chacrinha, eles estejam aqui pra confundir e não para explicar, ainda há a batida certeira do baterista Rick de La Torre e o acréscimo de elementos eletrônicos e samplers irados, saídos direto da cozinha sônica do chef Flu, que funcionam como o tempero ideal para dar o sabor que a gente degusta quando ouve Hoje Eu Resolvi Beber ou Seis da Manhã, crônica de inspiração chicobuarquiana sobre o cotidiano de um casal tipicamente popular. Porque eles vêm do rock mais tradicional que já rolou pelas terras sulistas (Bixo da Seda, Taranatiriça), mas eles também têm a manha e as artimanhas de todo brasileiro que sabe que o furo é mais embaixo e que basta um pouco de carinho, um cavaquinho, um violão manhoso, uma voz rouca e uma guitarra com wah-wah, tudo bem mixado para se conseguir um som que é tudo o que os gringos lá fora gostariam de fazer mas não sabem como.
Afinal, o som da Robô Gigante não é samba de pé quebrado nem samba de gringo de ouvido torto mas um som que é a soma de todas as variantes que rolaram e rolam na música popular do planeta nos últimos 40 anos. Sem medo de prestar tributo à aldeia que permitiu à Robô Gigante forjar sua sonoridade, em Não Me Tira Pra Bobo os caras revisitam a interminável e recompensadora via crucis etílica dos bares da provinciana e provocante Porto Alegre. Mas isso de localização geográfica é só questão de detalhe. O som da Robô Gigante não é rock gaúcho como alguns poderiam entender ou pretender rotular. Não que eles não digam, loud and proud, que são gaúchos, herdeiros espúrios da tosquice e da chinelagem inerente àqueles que nascem na chamada região pampeana. Mas a música que a Robô Gigante faz pode ser entendida, sem problemas, em qualquer canto desse nosso planetinha azul e globalizado. Até mesmo lá no Japão, onde eles foram buscar inspiração para o nome do grupo...

THE NEW ADVENTURES OF GIANT ROBOT (by Jimi Joe - winter/2007 - Free Translation by Ana Evangelista)
It’s not a Japanese cartoon, but it has some oriental touch in it, you can’t deny it. The result of the new adventures of Robô Gigante is a proof of this theory. The sound is a samba with a face of rock and roll, or a rock and roll with the soul of samba (the one from the old times, with pandeiro and cavaquinho). But the band goes well beyond the mix of styles in the songs produced in this new album. The guitars from Marcelo Truda, one of the guitar heroes from Rio Grande do Sul (who could, to tell the truth, be part of the selected league of gentlemen created by Robert Fripp in the other side of the Atlantic), give the tone of rock to Robô Gigante’s music, but the rimes from Marcelo Guimarães, the composer and singer, create the turn around, nominating Lupicínio, and reminding Paulinho da Viola in his modern phase of samba. One voice that sings samba, but sounds like rock. A rock that sounds like samba, but that doesn’t loose the pathos typical from rock. And, maybe because they are here to confuse and not to explain, there is also the drums’ bit from Rick de La Torre and the addition of electronic elements and samplers, prepared directly in the sonic kitchen of the chef Flu, that are the special spice to give us the flavor that we taste when listen “Hoje Eu Resolvi Beber”(Today I Decided To Drink) or “Seis da Manhã”(Six In The Morning), chronic inspired in Chico Buarque, about the daily life of a ordinary couple. They come from a traditional school of rock that happened in the south of Brazil (with bands as Bixo da Seda and Taranatiriça), but they also have the rhythm of Brazilian musicality, and know its tricks. They know that with a little bit of swing, one cavaquinho, a crafty guitar, a raw voice and an electric guitar with wah-wah, all of these smartly mixed, they get a sound that is everything the world wants to do but don’t know how.
In the end of the day, Robô Gigante makes a sound that is not a traditional samba, nor a fake one, but, yes, one that mix with wisdom all variants that happened in the popular school of music in the last 40 years, worldwide. With no fair of making a tribute to the world where the band created its own sound, on “Não Me Tira Pra Bobo”(Don’t Make A Fool Of Me) the guys revisit the endless and rewarding alcoholic via crucis of bars from the little but defiant city of Porto Alegre. But the geographic location is just a detail. The music from Robô Gigante is not a local rock, like some people could imagine. Not that they are not proud of being from Rio Grande do Sul, with all the crudity and the bohemian life characteristic from the region of “pampas”. But the music made by Robô Gigante can be understood, without effort, in any corner of this little blue planet called Earth. Even in Japan, where they found the inspiration for the name of the band…

There is currently a search for two types of bands for record label consideration.

1. A Pop/Rock/Commercial band with female lead. Band must consist of 2 guitars (Prefer both guitar players to be of lead caliber. However, one lead and one rhythm is acceptable), keyboard/piano, bass, and drums. Lead vocal, followed by backing vocals, in that order, is a plus as it relates to other members of the group. Average age of the band cannot exceed 28 years of age.
* Group must have an outstanding lead vocalist. ** Musicianship throughout the entire band must be very strong. *** Group cannot currently be under any contract of any type that is related to the music industry.
2. A Modern Rock band with male lead. Must be a complete band but there are no prerequisites as it relates to the make up of the band. Average age of the band cannot exceed 23 years of age.
* Group must have an outstanding lead vocalist. ** Musicianship throughout the entire band must be very strong. *** Group cannot currently be under any contract of any type that is related to the music industry.
