Band MembersAre we not allowed to have "local shows 3 weeks before" this show date? Im just asking because your email states it. - Dave

The people you bring to shows, pay for the shows. Rent, sound guy, promoter, security, bands. If you play locally too often, people will pick and choose which show they want to go to, diminishing your draw. Or they will get sick and tired of seeing you so much, that theyll stop coming to see you. The success of a show depends on the ability of the bands to get a decent crowd there to see them and once they get sick of you, you lose them and everyone involved in the show loses. Play a lot of shows but play as many as you can far away, to increase your fan base regionally. Dont play locally more than once every 3-4 weeks. And local means any location your major fanbase will not bitch about driving to come see you, usually less than 20-30 minutes away. - Mark

Thanks for the advice. We were under the presumption that it was most beneficial to just play as many shows as possible, regardless of location. We didnt realize the potential repercussions of doing so. - Dave

To anyone reading this - Too much of anything is never good. Ask yourself this question...Do YOU want to see the same band every 2,3,4 weeks? People need a break. Give it to them and theyll keep coming back. Overplay and they go away.

Dougs & North Beach...
NO INS-OUTS. Like all bar shows, if you are under 21, you cannot leave until you are ready to leave for the night. This is so the venue doesnt lose its license in case you go in the parking lot, drink alcohol and come back in...and they get blamed for serving minors.
NO MOSH!
DANCE YES, MOSH NO!

Fall Out Boy was on Volume I. Spitalfield was on Voume II. FOB was so new and humble then, I remember Pete being shocked that they were even asked to be on the CD

TENTATIVE SHOW!

This show may or may not happen (I have to check on venue availability) but I figured I'd look for local support now, just in case it does. These are three tour bands, had a show cancel on them, looking for a last minute replacement. Looking for 3 local bands that can bring 15-20 people to Aurora on short notice, on a weeknight. There will be no pay for any of the bands or me. On such short notice, we'll be lucky to get 25 people in the door, so all the door money will go to the venue for rent. If you can/will play knowing these conditions, please contact me immediately. Thanks

These are three very good tour bands that deserve your attention, if you are not doing anything this Thursday night, July 10th. Come to Dougs and hang out with these bands in what will surely be a very intimate setting

Promoter / Venue critique - Eric / Warship Wreckords & The Youth Center, Hinsdale
Promoter - A+
Venue - D
I meant to write this a few weeks ago but then my mom died and I got a bit behind
I went to The Youth Center's first show. Stumbled upon it accidentally online as I was looking for a Friday show for Ten Count Fall from Ohio. Got to the show and was very disappointed. First and most important, there was literally no parking. There were maybe 8-10 parking spaces for village employees, which the bands took up after employees left. Thats it. There was street parking but its next to the hospital and limited to 2 hours. The guy running the show, Eric's partner, told me I could park in the train station parking spots, which were about a block away. Big shows there can never happen. There is just no parking for it
Next, admission was $10. You know what I was told when I politely complained about the price? "Well, it's Hinsdale". Rich-ass community with big houses and apparently, expensive building rentals for their youth center shows
Then two of the bands cancelled, leaving only three on the show. All For Aspen who brought no one from St Charles (long haul), Ten Count Fall who brought no one from Ohio (even longer haul) and the 'headliner', Fire & 4Get, who surprisingly, brought about 7 people. Good for them. But that was the extent of the draw. 7 people. The bands mostly played for each other. Apparently, someone from the youth center was supposed to promote the show and said a lot of kids would be there. Didnt happen. Everyone knows anyway, that kids come to shows for bands they want to see and since there are no bands in Hinsdale, no Hinsdale kids care about seeing local bands. So fans must travel to see their fav bands there.
The room is very very small. I could, no bullshit, probably spit and hit the far wall. Very little space for 3 bands to store equipment, let alone 5. Even less room for merch tables. No stage, just a tiny, tiny area in the corner of the room for bands to play. Now lots of small bands in the city love these tiny, basement size venues where you can get up close and sweaty with your favorite band members. But I dont think anyone going to this suburban venue will, especially not for $10
On the plus side...
The upstairs has a nice chill area for kids, video games, pool table, TV I think. Maybe more. The staff was friendly as hell and even gave me free food and pop saying, "You paid your $10"
But most of all, I have to tip my hat to Eric and his partner and here's why. When I asked EP (Erics partner) if Ten Count Fall was still going to get a guarantee when it was obvious that no one was coming to the show, he said, "Yea, probly 20 bucks". Disappointing but expected with no turnout and rent to pay. But then EP called Eric and then talked to Ten Count Fall and you know what that nice bastard did? He told EP to give TCF their full $50 guarantee!
Eric, Eric, Eric. I hate your venue. I think you need to not do shows there. You NEED parking at a venue. And $10 is OUTRAGEOUS, sir. Bands are giving Rocker Dogs shit for charging $8-9 and you're charging $10 for that tiny room? I'm not on you're side on this one, Eric. You book three other decent venues and for better prices. Drop that place, man. Its not worth it and the bad name it will give you. Love Me Electric will NOT like walking into that place Friday, sir
On the other hand, Eric Warship Wreckords represents just the kind promoter every band appreciates. An honest one who honors his word. No one would have been pissed at Eric had he reneged on his guarantee to Ten Count Fall. He lost money on that show, the same way he will lose money on next Friday's show there. Yet he honored his word to TCF and paid them their guarantee, unlike By A Thread Records who have, on numerous, documented occasions, tried to get out of their guarantees with both venues and tour bands, when their shows fell short of what they expected.
I lost money last week on my Burden Of A Day show but paid the venue and tour bands guarantees. Tom from Screaming Beaver Records has lost money on shows, yet paid his guarantees. John from Kickstand Productions lost money on his first Dougs show, yet paid his guarantees. Tom, John and now Eric. These are the good guys. Promoters that bands should want to book their shows with. Just dont play your shows at Hinsdale Youth Center. Sorry, Eric. Build up your other venues. Let this one die a quiet death
Mark

So I listened to and saw a YouTube video of that Panic @ The Disco band today for the first time. They're not bad. They could be big someday

Dear Dr Mark

From: History Is Myth
Hey Mark... Our band has been around for many months now and we have played 4 shows, 5 if you count Doug's and 6 after July 11th
We are early on but we have fans and people who want to hear our music. We won a battle of the bands by popular vote and have had early success which we have been overjoyed with. The point of saying all this is not to brag but to give you some context in which to ask my question
We are finishing up recording a 5 song CD on Monday, which means it should be done and ready to produce in about 2-3 weeks from now... So we could have it ready to sell after the July 11th show
Obviously it would seem to make sense that we would sell our EP and get our music out there and make a little money to support out band, but some members of the band seem to think that selling an EP this early in our career is arrogant and that we should wait
I can see where they are coming from but in my experience if I go to a show and enjoy a band I want to have their music, and I love supporting local bands, so I always hope they have a CD to buy. I know I would never think to myself, didn't you only start like 5 months ago why are you selling music? I would just say hey I love your stuff and buy the CD
So based off what I would think, it would be fine to sell our CD
Am I the crazy one or am I right that it doesn't matter that we are still early on? Basically, is it fine to sell our CD and other merch or is it truly arrogant for a young band like us to sell an EP?
Thanks, Joe

From: Rock Chicago Promotions
I dont think its arrogant
I think your band is amazingly ambitious to HAVE recordings and a CD so soon
Carpe Diem!
But maybe you want to compromise
Burn a few hundred cheap demos with 2 songs on them to give away at shows to help promote the band

From: History Is Myth
Now That is smart... because that way you get music to WAAAAAAYYYY more people, and if they like the demo we just earned a solid fan. I know I wouldn't say no to a free demo
We got very lucky with the recordings so early, we practice a lot and we worked very hard writing and writing so we could have a full set to play as soon as possible. Once we had 5 good songs, Zach from Black Letter Melody (ex. Funeral Portrait) who is a good friend of ours said he would record our 5 songs for an AMAZING price, and he is as excited as we are about everything which is even better. He gave us as much time as we needed to get everything right and he is quite good at mixing and making everything sound great. So we have been up at 9 every morning for over a week now to go record
So yea we will probably produce copies of our 5 track EP to sell, which we already have the cover artwork and things ready, I have been doing photoshop for a long time so we don't have to pay for designs I do them myself
And definitely we will have some 2 song demos with us to give away, thats smart
Thank you,
Joe

Drama in Hardcore...or doesnt it just piss you off when people lie to you...

- In The Wake Of The Plague kicks out their singer, Nick, for stealing, among other things. Nick begs to come back. They let him back (According to Cliff, ITWOTP)
- Jeremy gets kicked out of So The Story Goes
- Nick leaves ITWOTP to take Jeremys place in STSG
- Cliff says ITWOTP is done. ITWOTP says, 'wait a minute, no we're not'
- ITWOTP breaks up
- Cliff messages me to tell me that Bryan from So The Story Goes told him, 'You were so right about Nick. We kicked him out'
- Richie from STSG says, 'wait a minute, no we didnt', we kicked out Bryan, saying Nick & Bryan had an argument, Nick left, the band wanted him back, so they kicked out Bryan instead
- Bryan says, 'wait a minute, no they didnt, I quit'

hey mark, it's bryan
just wanted to tell you i did not get KICKED OUT of So The Story Goes
I quit from my own free will and will be playing a farewell show on July 7th @ Clearwater Theater in order to show a peaceful leave
-Bryan (ITWOA)

From: Rock Chicago Promotions
Date: Jun 29, 2008 9:04 AM
They told me
that you and Nick argued
Nick left
They didnt want Nick to leave
so they kicked you out instead

lmao yeah well they must have lied because I left upon my own decision and they begged me to play the clearwater show with them cuz they cant find another bass player

BryanFxckingCole: I'm sorry it just really bothers me that they told you I was kicked out because that's not how it went at all haha
RockChicagoMark: then how did it go down
BryanFxckingCole: I quit because the sound wasn't much for me anymore and Nick was starting to get on my last nerve and disrespecting me in my own home (that I let him live in for 3 weeks) so I just quit the band since they were going to keep Nick and keep on fighting about every little thing. They wanted to kick Nick out before, then changed their minds 2 seconds later so I just said fuck it, I'm gone. And then I joined a new band and so far, it's been amazing because they know what they are doing and sound amazing

'Due to recent troubles within the band, Bryan has left and the bass position is currently available!
WE DID NOT KICK BRYAN OUT, HE LEFT BY HIS OWN FREE WILL
Please let us know ASAP if you'd like to be in STSG!!
-Must have own transportation or live close enough for us to pick you up
-Must have own equipment or be willing to buy own equipment
-Must be at least 17 (Message us if younger and we'll think about it)

RockChicagoMark: richie told me they kicked you out. i cant believe they posted that blog, making me look stupid
BryanFxckingCole: it makes ME look stupid too, i know what you mean
BryanFxckingCole: he told me to my face that he didnt say that
RockChicagoMark: i think they are saying that because without you, they cant play clearwater. i think you are being used
BryanFxckingCole: yeah, I feel that way. But he said he'd pay me $15 to play it
BryanFxckingCole: so i'm thinking about it
RockChicagoMark: $15? psh
BryanFxckingCole: hahaha
BryanFxckingCole: yeah, I know
BryanFxckingCole: but it was funny i told them 'well im not bringing shit and i hope its all old stuff cuz im not learning new shit' and they were like 'of course, whatever you need' =]
BryanFxckingCole: people bitched at them IN COMMENTS about me leaving, and compliments on the clean vocals =] kinda nice
RockChicagoMark: cant find my convo with Richie, musta deleted it
BryanFxckingCole: oh its alright
BryanFxckingCole: i believe you, he would do that haha

There. All sides of the story. Believe who you want to
Now all you guys leave me alone until you mature a lil bit and quit lying to me and each other
I dont need your lying bullshit drama
Thank you
Have a nice day
Mark

Please do not take this the wrong way, this is simply a question because I am curious how you make decisions and choose what bands play when. This is not intended to be my way to moan or complain that my band has to open a show, I am stoked to open the June 28th show. I'm just curious how you decide that. Because we committed to the show and were added to the lineup earlier than whatever band you choose to play at 7:45. I was simply surprised to see we are at 7 not at 7:45 because in my ignorance I assumed it was first come first serve. You know better than me though so I am just interested in how you decide to place the bands in their time slots

Once again, Thank you for letting us play at Doug's on the 28th. I just thought it would be helpful to understand things better in the future
Thank you!
-Joe
History is Myth

From: Rock Chicago Promotions
Date: Jun 16, 2008 3:05 PM
Lots of different factors go into deciding a bands position in a lineup including age, experience, how long the band has been around, how good or bad the band is, if youve ever played a show for me before, your projected draw, genre of music in relation to the other bands, etc

In your case, you are on an all ages, 20+ show...meaning its a Fri/Sat night, the biggest nights of the week for bars to make money selling alcohol. The owner is graciously allowing me 1 or 2 of these 'adult' shows a month to do 'all ages'. But its not so easy to find older bands that can draw and want to play early, especially at that location
So what I did was book older bands later and am booking two high school bands early, to bring in a bigger crowd/more money to help pay for the show

Now, in order to bring in that early crowd, its smart to book two bands that people want to travel to come see, not just one. Thats why I asked you what bands you would like to play with that people might come to see you play with
Scarla Myth wont be ready with their new singer. Black Letter Melody has a show the next day. Forlorn Hope hasnt responded to my email
If Forlorn had played, they would have opened, per your logic...and mine...first come, first served. Two bands I dont know, playing for me for the first time...you would have the advantage since I booked you first

But they didnt respond. At the moment, all I have is you guys, with no other band to partner you up with. Thats pretty much what happens with opening bands. Odd band out, looking for a first show at a venue, will take any spot just so they can play

I also would like to find a band more like Arescyn the tour band, to play right before them, especially since I cant find a band that 'goes with' you guys. So those are the reasons you are opening

However

That could still change. You could still play second, if I cant find a band like Arescyn to play before them. If a younger, less experienced band than yours for example wanted to play, Id move you to second

Keep this in mind...Its MUCH easier to start a band on the bottom, opening a show and move them later, than it is to book them later and have to move them earlier
If I were to book you second and something happened where I had to have you open instead, that would suck for all of us because youd have already told people you were playing later...so some of them would come later...and miss your set...and not pay to come in. Your draw would be less, the show would lose money, there would be less people at the show
I would much rather start you early, with the possibility of moving you later, than do it the other way. Plus, you know, you always have those people who are late who miss part of your set. By moving you later, those people wind up actually being on time

Many people think booking is such an easy job. Its not. A lot of thought and planning goes into each show, to try and build just the right show that people will want to come out and see. Do it right and you wind up with some memorable shows, happy fans and well paid bands. Do it wrong and you look like a schmuck, with low draw shows that lose money where no one gets paid

Thanks for asking me, politely, about this
Mark

Thank you very much. I realized it could be a loaded question and did not want you in any way to think I was complaining about our slot. We are so greatful for everything you do and for even letting us get exposure at Dougs at all!

You really do fine work, I totally understand everything in your response it makes perfect sense. I sent Forlorn Hope a message for you to see if they could play and they also did not respond

You should be happy to hear that since you booked us I have already confirmed a lot of friends who will be coming and should be bringing their own friends as well. And that is only the people that I myself have asked personally, the other members of my band I am sure are trying to draw people as well

Once again, I'm greatful for the thorough answer
Keep up the fantastic work for us kids. I hope to talk to you again in the future!

Hey Mark,
My name is Chris Kulwin (the lead guitarist of the band Few Left) and i have been reading your bulletin posts for the past 6 months or so to find out what has been going on around Chicago. I just wanted to say I appreciate and respect everything you do for us kids and hopefully we can work with you one day (my drummer is in madwatch, who you have worked with before) even though you work more with the hardcore/emo scene. I just wanted to introduce us and tell you we hope to see you in the future
Much respect
Chris Kulwin, Few Left
(playing Metro June 28th in the Emergenza finals)

Hey Mark,
I just got a message from a band saying that you sent them to me looking for shows. I appreciate you spreading my name like that and stuff. I'm not sure if it was you or amrita but a good amount of bands have been asking me for shows

I've run into a bit of a problem though, my dad isn't too hot about the whole show idea. He's concerned about losing money and stuff like and worried about putting money down. I try to explain him the pay system, but he doesnt hear it. Plus hes been bitching at me about grades and saying I need a REAL job and learn how things REALLY are. I've been working with some venues that wanted to do a deal with me for some shows, but since I'm only 17 I can't legally sign anything. And ofcourse at home I get zero support so I'm stuck

When I do turn 18 though next March, I'm really planning on taking this thing far. I would like to be like By A Thread (minus the scandals and controversy) or Kickstand. I appreciate the help you have given me. I'll be at the June 14th show w/ 1997. I'll be working in the scene again
Thanks,
Joepa

Dear Tour Bands,

I love booking tour bands. They provide variety to all local shows. Helping tour bands means they usually help our local bands when they tour. And it's a great feeling to see a tour band you booked, blow up and get signed
However
Unless you are signed tour bands that can, by yourselves, draw enough people to a show to pay for that show...it is NOT SMART to tour with other bands
I know it is more fun to tour with bands you know but it also makes it more difficult to get shows
- Every extra non or low draw tour band on a show, takes the place of a local that could have brought people in the door. The less locals on a show, the less chance a show can make enough money to pay the bills...and that includes your paychecks
- With the price of gas skyrocketing, tour bands guarantees are going up. The higher your guarantees, the less chance we will book you. Ergo, we have less of a problem booking one tour band for $100, than we do booking two tour bands for $200
- The more tour bands there are on a show, the less merch you sell!

I am always getting 2 and 3 tour band packages asking me to book them. But unless your guarantees are very low or I REALLY LIKE your band, chances are, I'm going to turn you down
One band tours are the way to go and best for all involved

Mark

Eric’s Leaving! WE NEED A DRUMMER!
Eric, our current drummer, is going to college in august, so were starting to look for a new replacement! this person (YOU?) will start in the middle of august when eric leaves, details later. heres what you need to read:
"REQUIRMENTS"
Commitment and ability to practice at least twice a week in Glen Ellyn, IL
Age 16 or older would be great, but if you're a good drummer it doesn't matter, does it now?
Ability to play shows ½ times a month, usually on weekends
Capability to play all our posted music and music on our new EP… and talent to innovate new music (we never stop writing)
Own a drum set and practice – play tight
Not a douche bag, no one likes douche bags (and have sense of humor!) We're all nice dudes so it'd be great if you were too

As long as you can arrive to practice/shows, age is not a big concern. We have a drum set where we practice so you don't have to lug over yours every time. We all have HUGE influences, and as a band, we don't write all one kind of music. If you have an open mind, we'll love you. So send us a vid/recording of some type of you playing a song (one of ours would be great as well) and we'll check it out! Open to anyone, help us and try out! this may seem like a ways away... but it isn't all that far!
SEND US A MESSAGE! TRY OUT! WE NEED YOU!

ATTENTION - Bands & Fans from Aurora, Oswego, Naperville, Geneva, Batavia, Montgomery, Yorkville, Wheaton, Winfield, Warrenville, Glen Ellyn, West Chicago...and other areas...

We need your help.

Dougs Rockhouse in Aurora has remodeled
New, bigger stage, in the middle of the wall / room.
No more tiny stage in the back corner. This new one is twice the size
New lighting installed. New sound system soon
Tom from Screaming Beaver Records doing sound now on All Ages shows
Up and coming tour bands on almost every all ages show
*Most bigger & signed tour packages brought to Dougs by John Ugolini / Kickstand Productions (Books The House Cafe in Rockford), with the assistance of RockChicago Promotions.

Bands and fans used to tell me...
"Dougs sucks. No one goes to shows there. The stage is tiny, the sound sucks, its too far away."
I dont get that any more from people. I get more comments like this...
Solitary X Mann: Man, Dougs is like the new VFW
Solitary X Mann: I love going to Dougs. Cause all the shows there are run by you and they’re so fucking...humble haha. Like no hate mosh, and everybody is so friendly. They actually go for the music
(Leo, Scarla Myth)

We listened. We improved. We are bringing you bigger shows, better sound
Now we need your help

We want to hear from you
We need to know what bands you want to see play Dougs...both big and small, signed and unsigned
We need local bands from the towns I listed to play support to larger acts, as well as ANY BANDS from ANYWHERE that can draw at least 20-25 people to Dougs
Most of all, we need your help getting the word out about Dougs
We need you at our shows
We need you to bring friends to our shows
We need you to help promote our shows
Were looking for someone to make a banner for Dougs, take promo pictures for the website at shows, make flyers for shows
Were looking for bands and fans to spread the word online, at other shows and malls, theaters and other places with flyers and posters

We are bringing the Aurora area bigger and better shows
Now we need your help to be able to keep doing that
