So you think you know the 80's?

Warriors...... come out and plaaaaaaaaaaayyyyy!! You ever wanted to learn to play "Stairway to Heaven" on the guitar and choreographed "Dancing Queen" by yourself in your room. You had ringside seats for Luke and Laura's wedding You ever had a Dorothy Hammill haircut. You thought a Commodore 64 was the highest technology available. Whooop, There it is! You wish you could talk like a Valley Girl You wanted to be "The Hulk" for halloween You want to be "Where Everybody Knows Your Name" 'A Different World' kicked butt. You would sing along ot the theme song of The Greatest American Hero. You didnt want to work, you wanted to Bang on the Drum all day You always wanted to drive a Pulsar The only words you knew to the song 'Der Kommisssar' was 'Der Kommissar' You owned, or wanted a "Frankie says..." T-shirt. You remember when the A-Ha video was the future of modern technology, and you can still sing all the words If the best non-slasher movie in your opinion is An American Werewolf In London. Did Mikey really like it? Two words: The Clapper. Six words: "This is your brain on drugs." You want to live in 'the Valley'. Ferris Bueller was your idol. You wanted to be either Nancy Drew or the Hardy Boys. You watched 'Star Search' on a regular basis You owned a Mr. Zogg's Sex Wax tee shirt Every now and then, you blurt out: "Ooh noo, Mr. Bill!!!" You tried to convince your Dad to fit a strip of red lights on the front of his Capri so it looked like KITT. If you had an entire wardrobe of Esprit clothing (or at least had one pair of jeans.) You knew the words to the "Oscar Mayer" theme song Your bangs are teased perfectly to 7 inches above the rest of your hair. Have multi-colored earrings that touch your shoulders White/Pink can of Aqua-Net Played Upwords, Boggle or Trivial Pursuit (the original) on a rainy afternoon You wore lace gloves with the fingers cut off, bangle bracelets up to your elbows, bright red Reebok high tops and parachute pants to a school dance You're still bitter that WHAM broke up You know whose phone number is 867-5309 You drink Diet Coke because Max Headroom told you to You still watch things on Beta tapes You have the tendency to turn up the collar of your polo shirts You never go out for a night on the town without frosted blue eyeshadow and feathered bangs Everything in your wardrobe is either pastel or fluorescent People are constantly gagging you with spoons. You wished you were the kid in Silver Spoons You know all the words to "I'm just a bill, sitting up on Capitol Hill" and "School House Rock." The feeling in your thumb is only now just returning after holding down the Atari joystick to control the racecar in Enduro Racer and Asterroids You still can't believe that Milli Vanilli was deceiving you all that time When Debbie Deb's 'Lookout Weekend' played you would run to the dance floor You can sing all the words to "One Night in Bangkok" by Murray Head, and now you understand that it is about chess. You still wear a bandana tied around your leg and/or a ponytail off-center on the side of your head. You know who Martha Quinn is. You still carry your boom box on your shoulder You think David Hasselhoff was awesome in Knight Rider but sucks in "Boob Watch." When you saw luging at the Winter Olympics you poured water down your driveway and tried it yourself. A piece of folded paper and two hands could tell your fortune. Knickers and leg warmers were cool You would dance really fast bouncing from foot to foot singing 'She's a Maniac, maniac. . .' Remember "Dancin' to a Big Mac at McDonalds!" What the hell was a Grimace (McDonalds character) You know who played Magnum P.I One Phrase, "The Plane, The Plane" You can name at least three members of the Brat Pack Still think banana clips were a godsend You wished you were in an episode of Love Boat Still wear Wet n' Wild makeup If your idea of hi-tech toys is still the heat-sensitive color-changing sticker on Transformers If you remember Bruce Willis from Moonlighting, not Die Hard. You owned or knew someone that had Hyper-Color shirts. You still wear your "Members Only" jacket. You still have a couple of those barettes made of woven ribbons. You had snap bracelets You remember when Pee-Wee wasn't a pervert. You had five pairs of socks on at any given time You still think Donkey Kong can beat Mario up If you still have your scratch-n-sniff sticker collection If you remember when you heard that drinking soda and eating Pop Rocks would make your stomach explode If you ever used Lee Press-On Nails If you wear jelly shoes Cabbage Patch Kids You still play with that CASIO SK-1 Keyboard Garbage Pail Kids You're still hoping for a New Kids on the Block reunion tour You still argue over who was better: Tiffany or Debbie Gibson Every time you hear the "OH YEAH..." song you think of "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" You wished you WERE Ferris Bueller You still watch tapes of Stingray, McGyver, and Airwolf The world stopped when the Challenger exploded. Did a teacher come in and tell your class? Half of your friends' parents got divorced. People did not just say no to drugs. AIDS started, but you knew more people who had a grandparent die from cancer. Somebody in your school died before they graduated. I drank Dr. Pepper. "I'm a Pepper, you're a Pepper, wouldn't you like to be a Pepper, too?" Shasta was for losers. TAB was a laboratory accident. Capri Sun was a social statement. Orange juice wasn't just for breakfast anymore, and bacon had to move over for something meatier. I listened to John COUGAR Mellencamp sing about Little Pink Houses for Jack and Diane. I was bewildered by Boy George and the colors of his dreams, red, gold, and green. MTV played videos. Nickelodeon played "You Can't Do That on Television" and "Dangermouse." Cor! HBO showed Mike Tyson pummel everybody except Robin Givens, the bad actress from "Head of the Class" who took all Mike's cashflow. Ronald Reagan was cool. Gorbachev was the guy who built a McDonalds in Moscow. My family took summer vacations to the Gulf of Mexico and collected "The Great Muppet Caper" glasses along the way. (We had the whole set.) My brother and I fought in the back seat. At the hotel we found creative uses for Connect Four pieces like throwing them in that big air conditioning unit. "Outrageous!" is the term to describe something neat and cool You think that Garbage Pail Kids are your children's worst enemy You had a poster of Bo, Luke & Daisy Duke There was nothing to question about Bert n' Ernie living together The phrase "Where's the beef?" still doubles you over with laughter. You went out and purchased the sound track for 'Miami Vice' You remember the magazines of song lyrics If you think Hulk Hogan is the best wrestler of all time.

Ready for more?
Leg warmers, wide leather belts, lace gloves and brightest neon clothes we could find. John Hughes films were watched over and over again (who doesn't know the words to The Breakfast Club, word for word?). Rob Lowe (need I say more?). For the other side... Heather Locklear (TJ Hooker then) Wham!, Duran Duran, The Outfield, New Kids on The Block, New Edition, Ratt, Pet Shop Boys. The Pee-Wee Herman, the Gator and break dancing Little House on the Prairie was on every day at 5:00. We made friendship pins out of safety pins and beads. The obligatory colored comb in the back pocket of your jeans Pony tails were cool. French braids were even better. And barrettes had ribbons hanging down. Pat Benetar set a trend in hairstyle and don't forget the feathered 'do. And when it came to hair, the bigger the better. Saturday night we watched the Love Boat and Fantasy Island. Thursday night was the best night on TV. The NBC Thursday night line-up: Cosby Show, Family Ties, Cheers, and Night Court. Others to remember: Square Pegs, Dallas, Knots Landing and CHIPS. Your mother made you wear corduroy pants on the first day of school. Food was cooked, not nuked. And papers were written by hand. Remember the Apple ][e? Cool was OP vs. Maui and Sons and preppy was an alligator named IZOD with the collar turned up. Jordache in the early 80's and Guess in the late. The world discovered the Valley Girl. Dog Town was the skateboard of choice. Rollerrinks still existed. The Pepsi challenge. Fast Times at Ridgemont High. The Lakers were on a streak. People held Hands Across America and sang We Are the World. Carter was the last Democrat in the White House in over a decade. David Letterman made his talkshow debut. Germany reunited and the Berlin Wall came down. Real ice-cream WITH fat! Where's the Beef? Clothes were designed for real people and nine-year olds weren't anorexic.

FRIZZ RECORDS

FRIZZ RECORDS

Nov 10 2009 12:15 AM

....FRIZZ RECORDS is proud to announce our fourth LP release...

LEILA ADU has been described as 'A Nina Simone for the Noughties', and her two acclaimed albums infuse a broadly 'art-rock' approach with elements of torch song, speakeasy blues, avant garde jazz, gamelan, post-rock textures, and a David Lynch style dreamlike b-movie melodrama. As her website has it, exploring the "dissonant edges of familiar forms", but with that kind of 'dissonance' that they once accused Thelonious Monk or Debussy of, the kind that soon betrays it's own compelling melodic and harmonic logic to the attentive listener...

'Dark Joan', Leila's third album as a solo artist, was recorded in Chicago with the legendary Steve Albini (PJ Harvey, Joanna Newsome, Nirvana, Pixies), and Albini's genius has been to strip her sound back to it's essence, and hold it's most distinctive qualities up to the light. It doesn't hurt that this is by far Leila's most powerful set of songs to date, and if anything we are lead even deeper into her world by the pictures painted with just piano (or in some cases harpsichord or a grime-encrusted electric piano) and that voice...

Capable of anything from delicate heartbreaking purity to a fearsome dramatic power, her powers are seemingly limitless, yet unlike most other singers of her calibre, never does she resort to melodrama or show-boating, or any kind of pastiche, instead she employs her resources fully in the expression of her distinctive musical vision and the deep well-spring of her imagination. Nothing ever sounds as though it could have not been sung...
