Rockers Hi Fi [nee Original Rockers] was formed in 1992 by Richard "DJ Dick" Whittingham and BiggaBush in Birmingham, England. Originally inspired by the DIY ethos of acid house they soon hit upon the idea of combining house rhythms with dub basslines, which led to their biggest (and only) "hit" - Push Push. Ably assisted by the Groove Corporation [G-Corp] in their Elephant House studio this track became a worldwide classic and is still held in high regard to this day. But Rockers Hi Fi was about so much more than this track or this style. Always inspired by new developments in music, Bush & Whittingham produced in a huge range of styles, including trip hop, drum & bass, techno, ambient, soundtrack, hip hop, electronica, virtually any maverick producer since 1960, but especially Andew Weatherall, Scientist, Lee Scratch Perry, David Axelrod, DJ Shadow and the early Mo Wax releases, Todd Terry, Frankie Bones, Richie Hawtin, Wax Doctor, LTJ Bukem, Pressure Drop, Leftfield, Orbital, Richard H Kirk, The Orb, and many more.
Between 1992 and 2000 they made four albums, a DJ Kicks and remixes for artists such as Sly & Robbie, Dawn Penn, Shantel, Karma, Nils Petter Molvaer, Saint Etienne, Earl 16, Tosca, Yasushi Ide, Neotropic, Sapien and even Paul Weller. They toured extensively in Europe and the USA and after being dropped by Island after their first album, famously toured Germany off their own back which led to them signing to WEA in Hamburg. Rockers were able to use their major label status to help further their own Different Drummer imprint, which also released a wide range of artists discovered by Rockers during the 90s.
