A collection of pioneers, Jacobi Red, Corey Maniken Matthews, and Mello Rockvam, are the heart, lungs, and brain of the emerging music group The Electives. Though based in Atlanta, Georgia, The Electives are not what one would typically expect from America’s largest hub of rap music. Add The Beatles meets Pat Benatar to Lupe Fiasco, multiplied by N*E*R*D, and the solution is the essence of The Electives’ sound. Yeah, I mean it. Heralded as “genre-alchemists”, the trio have always been influenced by all different forms of music; Jacobi grew up listening to N’Sync, Smash Mouth, and various rap he was able to sneak behind his parents; at the same time Sam Cooke, Outkast, and Gnarls Barkley shaped Corey; while Mello fed himself the likes of Gym Class Heroes, The Arctic Monkeys, and Robots In Disguise. With the compilation of poetically clever phrases, remarkable beats, and witty lyrics, Red, Matthews, and Rockvam present a refreshing take on music that is a certain “je ne sais quois” which defines their band. They insist on making a more intimate connection with their fans and therefore are respected in the fields they pursue in the artistic arena. Instead of amassing a resume of mediocre ‘joints’ that (as anyone who has experimented knows) have virtually no longevity. The Electives take great care in assembling perhaps a short film through their songs, making it impossible to expect the next element a listener will encounter. Red, Matthews, and Rockvam, are not your ordinary lyricists; they are driven by their passion for music and their collective vision for the future of pop culture as a whole which they craft through their ascension. The Electives aspire to not only inspire, but also to influence the changing music industry as connoisseurs in art, fashion, and music.
