Kerrang review of Rebel Yell at Water Rats London, 28.01.08. KKKK. 'IN THE MIDNIGHT HOUR, THEY CRIED MORE! MORE! MORE!' Punk rock, done properly, is a fabulous thing; it's a shame too few bands understand. Rebel Yell, from Leeds, get it. Quiffs, tatts, fistfuls of punk rock attitude and a clutch of red-hot, white-knuckle rock'n'roll anthems... what's not to like! At the front of the stage James Dean-lookalike Ray McGown attacks his stand-up double bass like a boxer, fists steaming in from every angle; at the rear his brother Craig stands behind a scaled-down kit that would fit into Neil Peart's bass drum, sweating like a god, hammering out rhythms that rattle along like the 3:10 to Yuma. This is raw, restless music wired into rock'n'roll's DNA - Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis - and filtered through the 'fuck you, fuck everyone' energy of The Clash at their hungriest. And it's breathless, deathless stuff. Songs like Lost A Blue, Bang Bang I'm Famous, and Glasses Knives and Bottles strut with last-gang-in-town cockiness, all terrace chant aggression and simmering sexual tension, perfectly capturing the fight-or-fuck edginess of a small town Saturday night. Stupidly, Rebel Yell are still unsigned: go see 'em while their raucous rock'n'roll rumble is this pure and perfect. (Review by Paul Brannigan)
