Influences
The basis for StarFish is, even though we play kid friendly rock & roll, we play rock & roll in the style of the guitar driven rock bands of the 60’s and 70’s from The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Yes and Jimi Hendrix to The Who, Led Zeppelin, Phish and even up to U2 and Tom Petty. Other bands/musicians with heavy influence over our tunes include Billy Joel, Styx, Steely Dan, Joe Jackson and James Brown.

Laurie Berkner says: "Looking for a true rock band with talented musicians and lyrics made for kids? You'll find it in Starfish!"
StarFish is a fun, hip, rockin’, jammin’ kids/family music band, born and based in Maplewood, NJ, that is currently taking over the world of family friendly entertainment. If you are between the ages of 2 and 92, get ready for a new musical adventure that will rock your world. StarFish has landed. Please note; this band is NOT a Wiggles cover band, this band knows how to rock!
After playing music in various capacities for most of his life, Ray Leone discovered a whole new genre after becoming a dad; kids music. Ray started bringing his guitar into his wife’s Kindermusik classes and his son’s pre-school and combined the kids tunes they all knew with “jamming” tunes such as “I’m a Believer” and “Yellow Submarine.” “I also started checking out some kids performers and I always felt the kids wanted to let loose a little more (and their parents too!), you know, they wanted to rock out a little more.”
So, Ray recruited Marc Stern, and Dave Hartkern, both Dad/musicians from the Maplewood area, and StarFish was born. “These guys are awesome musicians, We’ve all been playing in bands and playing music forever and now that we all have kids, We’re learning from them and bringing their experiences into our music. It’s great to get the whole family together and sing and dance and, well…you know, rock out a little too.”
