Music soothes the soul and no one does it better than Nancy Wilson. She is a true interpreter of great lyrics. I have taken a great liking to some true talented songstresses who have not gained the fame and acclaimed as the manufactured "Pop/RB Divas" of today. Check out the likes of Adriana Evans, Lina, Leela James, Kimiko Itoh (a Japenese Jazz Vocalist), Jane Monheit & the second coming of Millie Jackson, the incredible Jaguar Wright. My music collection ranges from Ace of Base to Yanni.
Movies
There's nothing like a great performance to make a movie. Among my favorites are the remake of "Imitation of Life," "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane," "The Color Purple," and "Claudine." There is a theme with my viewing choices, I admire strong women who are able to smile through the bad times and celebrate the good. Just like my momma.
Television
Thank God for channels like TV One, that introduces a new generation to such incredible African-American shows like "Good Times." Although a product of the 1970's the storylines are still relevant today. "The Jeffersons" inspire me to "move on up," and "227" celebrates what is missing in today's society, a sense of community.
Books
My taste in literature ranges as well as my musical taste. They include: "The Ways of White Folks" by Mr. Langston Hughes, "Kindred" by Octavia Butler and "The Color Purple" by Ms. Alice Walker. But the three that have had the biggest impact on my life are: "And the Band Played On" the most accurate account of the history of the HIV/AIDS pandemic; "What Looks Like Crazy on an Ordinary Day," by Ms. Pearl Cleage and "The Front Runner," one of the very first gay love stories I ever read.
Heroes
My heroes/sheroes are not well known by many. Their contributions are not chronicled in headlines spread across our nation's papers, but they make a difference in the lives of many. For starters, my mother. Secondly, Dr. Helene Gayle and Dr. Cecilia Maxwell, doing their part to end the HIV/AIDS Pandemic in the African-American community; Dr. Ron Simmons of Us Helping Us, Inc. in Washington, DC. He is making a difference in the lives of African-American gay/bisexual men infected & affected with HIV/AIDS in the Washington, DC area...
