I try to play me. I work real hard to play how I feel and the way things make me feel. I am very emotional and it is reflected in my music. To cry perhaps to laugh to dream perhaps to love to play and always Be me "ahhaaaa that's the rub"!
Rodney is a musician, poet and writer. He is an eclectic artist.
He plays
the flute, organ, piano, harpsicord, bass clarinet and saxophone. In the late 60's
into the early 70's, Rodney lived and played music in San Francisco. A
dedicated hard working artist, Rodney is a self-described perfectionist. Over
the years, he has contributed to several albums on the Chicago's Audio 8 label,
playing flute and saxophones. He has recorded with Chicago hip-hop artists,
noted jazz musicians and has published poems and written an opera.
The tracks on the playlist are "one take" in Audio8 Studio Wicker Park, Chicago.
From the "Autumn in Chicago" album (2006), Produced by Will Freyman.
Johnny Caldwell plays cello on "Daybreak on 5th Avenue".
Rodney studied classical and opera composition under Mrs. J. Christopher of the Bay Area. On one of many retreats to the Perry cabin in Carmel, he started the
"Operatic Mythological trilogy "Noontide".
In the early 60's Rodney studied woodwinds, clarinet, and saxophone with Victor Self, Ron Dewar, and Archie McCallister, Jr. In 1969, he studied with Rahsaan Roland Kirk, in San Francisco for a period of time.
Towards the end of the 90's, Rodney was performing with a local Urbana, IL jazz/hip-hop ensemble, Dolce Stil Nuovo. He played Sax and flute on the "INFRUSTRUCTURE" CD with Dolce Stil Nuovo at Pogo Studios, Champaign, IL.
Artist of many talents, Rodney is also an opera man.
In June of 2006, Radio Free Urbana (WRFU-LP 104.5 FM) aired Rodney's "artist
statement", which was a two-hour program chronicling his history as a musician
and poet. During the program, he talked about his mythological opera, "Noontide
Trilogy". Six actors from the University of Illinois performed four partial
scenes and one full scene of the drama.
The "Noontide" opera grew out of writings by Rodney many years ago in Carmel,
California. The opera's opening speech was written in a cabin about a block and
a half from the beach, where he was studying with J. Christopher Harold. In
1993, Rodney journeyed to Vienna, Austria, where he wrote Noontide: Part 1.
In reference to the "Noontide Trilogy", Rodney indicated that "The music for the
drama is classically structured," "But the script is written so that people can
get involved with the characters and get involved with the plot. I didn't write
it to try and be above anybody."
Pogo Studio in Urbana recorded a CD of Noontide: Part 1 in October 2000, which
included 11 actors and Vladamir Zirimba of the Moscow Symphony Orchestra playing
soprano sax, Peacock said. Part 1 of Noontide is scheduled to be performed live
at Foellinger Auditorium in August 2007.
"The program talk was primarily about the two dramas that I have composed," he
said. "[Its purpose is] to garnish support and hopefully get some investors to
be a part of this project."
He acknowledges that a career in the arts is not always a profitable choice, but
he doesn't mind.
"This is the lifestyle I have chosen," he said. "It's fun. I mean, I wouldn't be
doing it if it wasn't ...
I have to enjoy what I'm doing, and it has to be fun no matter what setbacks I
have."
"There are a lot of people that tell me I have talent, but that doesn't mean
anything until you do something with it,"

Hey Rodney, We love "Dancin' on the Beach". It's beautifully composed with a nice Reggae, syncopation...subtle not overbearing so you can hear the clarity of the flute. Play on brother!! Please check out our flute and guitar duo at our Myspace Page. Invite us out to Champaign-Urbana for a concert or a "sweet corn festival" we're ready to do the Mid-West tour.
