BRAZILIAN MUSIC
RHYTHM SECTION APPROACH and MELODIC INTERPRETATION
(for all instruments as well as singers)
This is an interactive workshop, where the students will develop a better understanding of the rhythm approach to Brazilian music.
They will experience and feel the Brazilian “swing” by playing their primary instrument (whether melodic or from the rhythm section) or singing.
The students will also be exposed to playing easy patterns on a secondary instrument (i.e. percussion) in order to understand better the interaction among the rhythm section instruments and between the rhythm section and the melody on this style.
Some topics to be covered:
- Musical examples of a wide variety of Rhythms such as Samba (in 2/4, 3/4 and in 7/8), Frevo, Afoxé, Maracatu, Baião and related rhythms/styles (Maracatu, Xaxado, Forró, etc.).
- Basic rhythmic motifs and patterns among the rhythm section instruments
- The different melodic approach among the various styles.
- Brief review of some historical aspects (Choro, Bossa Nova, Carnival samba-batucada and northeastern Brazilian music).
This workshop has been already presented at the Felix Mendehlson Musikhochschule in Leipzig (Germany), ESMUC (Escuela Superior de Musica - Barcelona), Taller de Musics (Barcelona), the Institut Musik Daya in Jakarta (Indonesia), Rotterdam Music Conservatorium (Holland), Bird’s Eye (Basel, Switzerland), at Dynamo Jazz Schule (Zurich, Switzerland), Wagner College in Staten Island (NewYork), Summer Clinics at the Manhattan School of Music in Belluno (Italy), Accademia Romana di Musica (Rome, Italy); among others.
