The most skilled Dj’s always have the ability to sense the anticipation and feelings of their audience. These artists go along and ride the musical palette like a surfer riding the waves of the ocean. It is precisely this skill that Roger Martinez has been praised for numerous times.
In combination with his seamless musical mixing technique he, as an upcoming talent, has surprised many with his performances. Although he has been known through the years as a “Progressive DJ”, his sets are living proof that his musical taste reaches much further. Especially in his own productions he tries to go beyond genres and formats. He approaches (dance) music from an emotional perspective and emotions can be hard to label. He explains: ,,Music must contain mystery, harmony and melody. These elements are the key to human emotions and feelings.” This vision lay at the basis of Roger’s initial and quick rise to the forefront of the dance scene. His first ever released record “The House” was immediately charted by Paul van Dijk, number 1 DJ at the time according to DJ Mag.
After performances in Ibiza (Club Eden), Romania (Fashion Club), Switzerland, Spain (Cirque du Soleil), England (Kensington Rooftop Gardens), Lithuania (Global Club) and playing at events like Sensation White twice, Roger won the 2007 Marco V DJ-contest. This got him a gig at the famous Dancevalley Festival. Later that year his first release on Marco V’s “In-Charge” label immediately hit the Beatport top 10 dance charts for several weeks. His skills got the attention of many of the big names in the scene. He was even asked to do a remixing work for Dj Tiësto’s mix album “Elements of Life: Remixed”.
His music has been supported through the years by the likes of Fedde le Grand, Tiësto, Marco V, Paul van Dijk, Hernan Cattaneo and Sander van Doorn.
This all has been the result of Roger’s love for rhythm, melody and harmony. As a 4-year old kid he was tapping rhythms on everything he could get his hands on. He also liked to play around with his mom’s old pick-up. Everything from Maria Callas to Deep Purple went through his hands. 12 years later this attraction to vinyl pulled him into the DJ life…
At the moment Roger Martinez has even more broadened his musical horizon via his “Horizontal Excursions” (HE) project. HE originates from a graduation project he has done in 5.1 surround, which utilized video art. In this project he expresses his love for soundscapes and ambient music. His first works, again, immediately gained the attention of the big boys in the ambient scene. Therefore Roger’s first ambient release is part of a compilation that has been compiled by Kompakt’s “Pop-Ambient” icon Markus Guentner. With his ambient music (mixed in 5.1) Roger Martinez tries to reach people in the most intense way up till now.
,,Music can affect people on a deeper, universal, emotional level and thus can unite people...”
