"Roksonaki may be the most interesting avant-garde band to come out of Central Asia since the Soviet Union's collapse in 1991. Bringing the 13th century into dialogue with the 21st, their unique sound fluently and joyfully combines elements of ancient nomadic Kazak traditions -- reed flutes and throat-singing -- with contemporary rock and jazz. Roksonaki are musically fluid and as at home playing rock and roll as they are improvising new classical motifs with Yo-Yo Ma. Watching the ease with which they create new sounds leaves you wondering why no one ever thought of this before. When I worked with them at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in 2002, their ecstatic fans included toddlers, retirees and everyone in between. People couldn't get enough of Roksonaki. After the Festival, nearly 300 of them contacted me to buy Roksonaki's album and they still write wanting to know when Roksonaki will come to the US again. "
