There was something different about the 70’s; a kind of feeling that permeated everything from the decade, leaving behind whatever it touched with a soulful aura. To this day, people still pull out their old James Brown L.P.s just to hold the vinyl and remember what it felt like. The members of Rolo’s Pocket never forgot.
Like everything else made in the 70’s these kids are touched with an energy that jumps from pop to soulful to funky faster than Rocky Balboa racing up a flight of stairs. The Dallas, TX four-piece started when producer/keyboardist Oliver Benavidez met bassist Jimmy Green, and determined to put forth a sound unlike anything heard before in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. The trip took off when they picked up an amazing singer/guitarist, Jonathan Malone, and soon afterwards they were able to coax the talented drummer Jacob Schrodt into throwing in his lot with the group.
With the release of their highly anticipated 2007 E.P. “Don’t Forget to Shine”, the group continues to make waves with both local and national performances, bringing with them an incredible following of positive and supportive cats and kittens. To quote one production company, “A Rolo’s show feels more like a house party than just another [performance] at some venue. The crowd is almost like a part of the group, some of them eventually ending up on stage to sing along with the band.”
Between impromptu covers and tossing Rolos candy out to the fans, their gigs aren’t just part of your night out- they are the night out.
My belief has always been that those who are not named Al Green should not attempt to sing his songs. My beliefs have been altered...slightly. Great job yesterday evening!
