....Roman Alexander and The Robbery A flawless fusion of soul, funk and blues – with just a hint of reggae, will smoothly take you away, gently nudging your mind, awakening something new.
....The band began as Roman Alexander’s solo project, eventually evolving to include Ryan Reno on bass. Roman offered to “put all [his] eggs in one basket” and Ryan followed suit. Through timely and tedious auditions, Roman and Ryan still had no one they could call their drummer or lead guitarist. That all changed with Jeff Carruth, a reggae drummer who seamlessly blended with Roman’s soul, funk and blues output. “I was looking at Ryan and [he] was just giving me this nod of approval.”says Roman. Ryan concurs: “He fit like a glove.”
....With drummer in hand, the band soon picked up a guitarist as well, and made plans to tour Florida – Jeff’s home state – wanting to “take [their] music to the East coast.” Enter now Roman’s 1973 motor home, aptly nicknamed “The Ice Cream Truck” and described as being “about as aerodynamic as a cardboard box.”
....Setting sail on April 1st foreshadowed what was to come, as their April Fool’s day launch set the stage for trouble. The RV broke down 3 times before escaping California, leading to a grand total of 13 RV breakdowns on their “non-stop” voyage to Florida.
....Though the situation looked grim, silver linings found their way. During one breakdown, the band called a local tow-truck company, only to realize they had no money left. Through good will and kindness, the truck driver changed their tire for free, only asking for “some of d‘em young concert chicks” in return. Not much later, the RV runs out of gas and the band found themselves coasting into a lone, rural gas station. Upon hearing their situation the gas station attendant paid for their gas and sent them on their way.
....Good luck can only last so long as the RV sputtered and broke down yet again. This time a quick call was made to Jeff’s family and the band was soon rescued from their metal deathtrap.
....After weeks of playing shows and lounging in the Florida sun, the RV breaks down for it's last time. After their last show, Roman and Ryan flew back to California while Jeff remained with his family in Florida. The band had lost its RV, a PA head, and a guitarist all in the same tour - Jeff debated returning to California: there was nothing for him there but the band, and without a guitarist, even that was uncertain. It was only a matter of time before Roman and Ryan gave Jeff a call about a new guitarist – Matt McDavid, simply saying “Dude, he’s sick.”
....With a full band once more, Roman Alexander and The Robbery are a force to be reckoned with. “We’ve been on tour at home for the last 9 months,” says Ryan, accurately describing the Robbery’s full schedule – something that most bands look at with gaping mouths and eyes of awe. Playing an average of 15 to 20 shows a month, Roman Alexander and The Robbery are hand-delivering their music to more and more fans each and every week.
....Though the band has been through its share of “mean old arguments and almost fist fights,” this is one tight group of musicians, a trait that comes through in their eclectic and diverse music.
....Roman Alexander and The Robbery have just finished recording their latest album, and are looking at a late July 09 release. Though seemingly impossible, the band will be greatly increasing their show per month ratio, launching a massive promotional tour to kick off the new release. The upcoming self titled album has a worldly new feel, ranging in a large number of different genres and styles.
....Matt describes their strategy: “everybody’s got a little pocket where they’re gonna like only certain styles”; so no matter what music you’re into, Roman Alexander and The Robbery will pull a part of you into themselves, taking your ears on a global voyage through musical evolution.
