I write paranormal romance, and I love to read paranormal fiction of all kinds. I enjoy reading almost as much as writing -- and I believe you have to read a LOT in order to write effectively.
I thrive on hiking and watching wildlife. Other interests? Wolves (real ones) and Pugs. Yes, it's an odd combination but believe me, my pug has gotten in touch with his inner wolf since we moved to Alaska! Our newest pug seems to have discovered that side of herself too.
The two pugs like nothing better than to walk the hiking trails in the coastal rainforest, drinking out of mountain streams and licking herring eggs off the rocks on the beach. Fierce, wild pugs!
Music
Coldplay, Bif Naked, Dido, Hawksley Workman, Our Lady Peace, Good Charlotte, Evanescence, Nickelback, Pink, Avril Lavigne, Rachel Ferguson, Weezer, Jimmy Eat World, Puddle of Mud, Sloan, System of a Down, Sum 41, Theory of a Deadman, Blink 182, All American Rejects, Linkin Park, 3 Doors Down, Creed, just to name a few...
Movies
Let’s just say it up front – I love comic books and graphic novels, and I doubly love it when they’re brought to the screen – but only if they’re well done. Fortunately these types of movies have just gotten better and better in recent years. Two recent movies have set a new standard:
First was IRONMAN – I’m so impressed with how they managed to bring that story into the twenty-first century. Kudos to the writers on that one. Good performances too.
Then came THE DARK KNIGHT! I was in love with BATMAN BEGINS, but the sequel blew my socks off. I think it blew the socks off the public at large. I’m buying a copy of this one – it’s a keeper.
I definitely own a copy of HELLBOY. Ron Perlman rules! So I was thrilled to see a sequel come out at last. HELLBOY II, THE GOLDEN ARMY isn’t quite the same quality as the first one, but Perlman is worth watching no matter what. He’s breathed life into that character that transcends the original graphic novel.
And yes, I am SO waiting for the TWILIGHT movie.
INDIANA JONES: KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL was worth watching once, but only once. It wasn’t nearly as good as THE LAST CRUSADE and Marion deserved a helluva lot more lines.
THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES – loved it and hope there’ll be more! THE GOLDEN COMPASS – hoping for more of this one too! Both are keepers!
Notables in the classics department:
BUBBA HO-TEP – this Bruce Campbell flick is outrageously wonderful.
SIGNS and THE SIXTH SENSE are favorites of mine. I’m definitely a fan of M. Night Shyamalan. His offerings are like Twilight Zone episodes – amazing and disturbing. Some are great, some only have great moments. Looking forward to catching a glimpse of THE HAPPENING.
I love animated features, especially almost anything by PIXAR. WALL-E was totally charming. Some of my favorite old classics are NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS (of course!), THE INCREDIBLES (but you have to watch JACK-JACK ATTACK), TOY STORY (I and II), MONSTERS INC., THE GREAT OUTDOORS, SHREK, etc.
Not sure what it says about me, but I totally loved THE SIMPSONS MOVIE.
Television
John Edwards Cross Country, Psychic Detective, Ghost Whisperer, Bones, reruns of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, Moonlight, Medium, Living Among the Dead, Supernatural (I can see a theme here...LOL)
You’ll also find Nat Geo, the Science Channel and the History Channel on almost every night in our house.
Plus, I have a confession to make --- I love cartoons. Yay, SpongeBob! Avatar is very cool. And INVADER ZIM RULES!!!!
Books
J.R. Ward tops the roll of my favorite paranormal authors. Her Black Dagger Brotherhood novels are fabulous. Also on my “buy immediately” list are Charlaine Harris, Katie MacAlister, Patricia Briggs, Karen Chance. Stephen King is on that list too!
Other favorites include Kim Harrison, Stephanie Meyers, Sherrilyn Kenyon, MaryJanice Davidson, Kelley Armstrong, Laurell K Hamilton, Karen Marie Moning, Kat Richardson and Dean Koontz.
Heroes
The number one HERO in my life is my HUSBAND, hands down. I feel so lucky and blessed to have him in my life.
Lesser (but important) heroes include the two authors who first inspired me to write: Ray Bradbury and Stephen King.
DANI HARPER author of paranormal romance's Details
I write paranormal romance, and I love to read paranormal fiction of almost any kind. Stephen King spoke of always having had a love of the unquiet coffin... and I have too. I’ve been a bigger fan of Halloween than of Christmas all my life. Werewolves (also known as shifters, changelings, skinwalkers, lycanthropes or lycans) are probably my favorite but ghosts, vampires, faeries and demons get my attention as well. I enjoy reading almost as much as writing -- and I believe you have to read a LOT in order to write effectively.
It was only a matter of time (several years actually, but hey) before I traded my newspaper editor hat for that of a paranormal romance author. My first novel came out in May 2007, and the sequel is on a publisher's desk. Two novellas are coming out in October and December of 2008. And I'm working on two more full-length novels as I type this.
Today, I live on an island in southeast Alaska with my fisherman husband. My stories get written on land or at sea, with the help of my Official Muse, Scooby the Pug.
P.S. You'd think I'd have a husky or a malamute or some other wolf-like dog, but noooooooooooo --- I've been owned by PUGS for years and years. My website is devoted to wolves but also features photos of my pug, Scooby, who is very much in touch with his inner wolf. Recently Scooby insisted on some admin help for his Official Muse duties, so we now have Fiona the Pug as well. If you like PUGS, Scooby, Fiona and I would love to hear from you!
This is SCOOBY, my Official Muse!
Video: HEART OF THE WINTER WOLF
Love werewolves? Me too. There's a primal appeal that just can't be denied. I've been thrilled by reader response to my novel, HEART OF THE WINTER WOLF, a paranormal romance from New Concepts Publishing. Rated Sensual.
Who I'd like to meet: Readers, authors, paranormal fans and lovers of fantasy and paranormal romance.
By the way, I support Defenders of Wildlife. I share this organization's devotion to conservation and especially stopping the slaughter of wolves here in Alaska. Be sure and check www.romancingthewolf.com for more about this!
