About me: Once thought to be an average filmmaker with an affinity for blood and gore, George A. Romero is today, considered to be a revolutionary storyteller, credited with changing the entire horror genre. From Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead and Land of the Dead to Creepshow, Romero perfected the use of populist zombies and ghouls to make palatable a political subtext on societal issues: corporate greed, terrorism, class conflict, consumerism, and, with his new film, the current media/reality/sensationalist frenzy.
In addition to perfecting the radical allegory, Romero is credited with being one of the niche mavericks of American independent cinema, working largely out of the mainstream to retain the utmost creative control over his projects. As many of his other “low-budget” projects, Romero has personally financed his latest film, Diary of the Dead scheduled to be released in February. “He’s remained true to his vision. He’s never compromised,” says filmmaker John Landis (Director of An America Werewolf in London). Several of Romero’s films are housed in institutions like the Museum of Modern Art.
In addition to zombie flicks, from Night of the Living Dead (1968) to Diary of the Dead (2008), Romero written and directed other non-zombie related films, including:
Season of the Witch (1972) – A bored, unhappy suburban housewife gets mixed up in witchcraft and murder. SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 20th @ 12(noon):
Q&A following film with special guest, Director George A. Romero
The Crazies (1973) – A dark film about the effects of chemical poisoning in a small Pennsylvania town. SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 21st @ 4PM:
The Light Factory presents a biological nightmare, George A. Romero's 1973 tale of an early weapon of mass destruction and US Army’s “heroic” rescue.
Martin (1976) – A young vampire tries to kick his blood-sucking addiction. SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 20th @ 2pm:
Bring your fangs as The Light Factory presents George Romero's 1977 twisted teenage vampire movie with special guest, Director George A. Romero.
Too bad about the rescheduling... But another new Romero film is on the way! How will this affect the short film contest? Just curious... can't wait for the rescheduled event!
So looking forward to this. After dropping a lead actress 12 hours before shooting, losing our locations each day, scratching half the script to at least have a coherent storyline, severely lacking extras, oversleeping during last day of editing before getting in the mail to make the deadline and getting sucked in to breaking my personal oath to never make a zombie film, here's a sneak peek at my entry :) http://www. angelfire. com/il/drunkenflesh/maybe. html
