Sunday 18th Jan 2009. Danny Kyle Open Stage - Celtic Connections.
Rona are a contemporary folk band based in Inverness - they play original songs (rich with harmonies) and tunes alongside some great covers of traditional material but in their own style. Their sound also comprises instrumentals played by Janet & Heather two accomplished musicians in their own right. Rona have a unique sound brought about by the many different influences that come from each member of the band.
Bonnie and Jim met many years ago through the music scene in Glasgow. They have travelled the length and breadth of the UK for years in various band situations. Jim and Bonnie then decided after all these years, it was time to shuffle off back to Scotland to live on a permanent basis. They landed in Inverness in August 2005. ‘RONA’ came about more or less by accident.
Rona formed in May 2007 and started off with 3 members Bonnie, Malina & Jim. Malina has been singing since she was a wee tot. Classically trained, Malina enjoyed singing in choirs and music festivals throughout her childhood in a variety of genres. The three came together to play some songs that Jim had written and thoroughly enjoyed the experience collaborating, it has to be said that there was lots of wine & beer involved.
Thanks to Jim Hunter's encouragemant at Feis Rois, Bonnie, Jim & Malina played a couple of songs and were overwhelmed by the response from the many musicians & singers in attendance. It was then decided to expand the band, this is where Heather & Janet come into the musical equation.
Heather a whistle player learnt her whistle craft from the tutors of Feis Farr, Balnain House and from listening to the many brilliant Scottish and Irish whistle players over the years & Janet with her diverse fiddle style reflects a wide variety of musical influences from home and abroad. Both had played together supporting the likes of Phil Cunningham & Aly Bain, Dick Gaughan and Old Blind Dogs at Farr Hall. Their beautiful style of playing fitted exactly what the band were looking for.
Rona hope to go from strength to strength and are looking forward to the next step in their musical journey.
