Ron Finney is a well- known bassist in the Baltimore-Washington area. Born in Baltimore Md. Ron begin playing bass at the age of twelve. He started his first R&B group at the age of fourteen, which included now recording artist/ percussionist Victor Williams and the late great bassist Vincent Loving (who played lead guitar back then) . In high school he studied music under recording artist/music teacher, jazz saxophonist Ronald Kearns, and also played bass in the school Jazz Stage Band.
In the mid 80’s Ron started playing contemporary Christian music at the Living Word Christian Center in Baltimore, Md. where he was the bassist for the Praise Team. He had opportunities to share the stage with various Christian artist, such as, Fred Hammond/Commission.
Ron was a studio musician and engineer in the late 80’s for 3 years at LUV Studio in the Washington area, which allowed him to play with a variety of local artists. Such as, keyboardist Marcus Johnson with the Marcus Johnson Project and keyboardist Kenny Allen with Spur of the Moment Band.
In the early 90’s Ron had several projects that he was a part of. He played contemporary jazz with the Mike Stevens Project and also was the back-up bass player for jazz group Modem. Ron then joined a well known R&B band called “Expressions” located in Washington DC, Metro area which took him on a seven year journey. This group helped him to understand the business side as well as developing his stage presence and musical skills.
The band also released a CD called Long Time Coming.
In 1997, Ron joined Emmanuel Convenant Church in Hyattsville, Md. He played with the Praise Team under music director, and recording artist Minister Kim Jordan. Ron has had a desire to play jazz music in a Christian venue. His jazzy smooth style with a funky edge is what led him to help form the musicical group 150 East in the summer of 2003. From there in July of 2005 Ron was called to do an audition for recording artist Marcus H. Mitchell to promote his new CD release “Jumpin”. From there Ron has become the bassist and manager of the Marcus Mitchell project. The bandleader is Marcus H. Mitchell, from the well-known Marcus Johnson Project. This talented group has been invited to play in various locations in and out of the united states. During Labor Day weekend 2005 & 2006, they performed at the 3rd & 4th Annual Jazz Festival at Cooper's Field in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, sharing the stage with Paul Taylor, Peter White The Rippingtons (featuring Russ Freeman) and Marion Meadows. The group have had the pleasure to perform in some of the legendary jazz clubs around the country.
Ron is currently giving bass lessons and welcome all ages.
