DROWSY DRIVING IS A CONCERN NATIONWIDE AND UTAH IS AT THE FOREFRONT OF DEVELOPING EFFECTIVE PROGRAMS AIMED AT PREVENTING FATIGUED-RELATED CRASHES! IN UTAH, IN 2004, 32 PEOPLE DIED AND 563 WERE INJURED AS A RESULT OF SOMEONE FALLING ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL!
According to a Utah Department of Public Safety poll, 40% of adult drivers in Utah - about 642,000 people - say they have fallen asleep or nodded off for even a moment, while driving. In fact, of those who have nodded off, four percent - approximately 64,000 drivers - admitted they were involved in a crash because they fell asleep at the wheel. Surprisingly, 56% of these fatigued drivers reported that they dozed off during daytime hours between noon and 9:00 p.m.
To help prevent drowsy driving, before hitting the road, drivers should:
Get a good night's sleep
Plan to drive long trips with a companion
Schedule regular stops, every 100 miles or two hours
Avoid alcohol and medications that impair performance
Seek diagnosis and treatment if you experience frequent daytime drowsiness
The best way to prevent drowsy driving is to watch for warning signs of fatigue and get some sleep. Either take a 10-20 minute nap or find a safe place to sleep for the night.

AT LEAST 71,000 PEOPLE ARE INJURED IN FALL-ASLEEP CRASHES EACH YEAR AND A CONSERVATIVE ESTIMATE OF ANNUAL RELATED FATALITIES IS 1,500.

If you are feeling tired or drowsy, please don't get behind the wheel. The results could be deadly! In Utah, driving while fatigued causes more motor vehicle fatalities than drunk driving. Unfortunately, there is no test to determine sleepiness as there is for intoxication. So, how can you tell if you are "driving while drowsy"?
Warning Signs Include:
Difficulty focusing, frequent blinking, or heavy eyelids
Daydreaming or wandering thoughts
Trouble remembering the last few miles driven
