Ronny North

Live Gear: Tregan Ronny North signature guitars with Original Floyd Rose trems and Seymour Duncan pickups. Guitars strung with SIT (9-42) for standard tuned guitars and (10-52) for guitars tuned down to D. Ronny currently uses the Tregan prototype RN signature guitar for all down tuned stuff. The guitar also features a D-Tuna to drop the Low D down to C. The prototype was built by Greg Back for Tregan guitars. All guitars equipped with the Feiten Tuning System for perfect intonation. For live acoustic work Ronny uses a Hohner Eclipse electric acoustic guitar (strung with SIT Light acoustic strings). Amps are Laney VH-100R and Laney GH-100 Tube heads through Laney 4x12 cabs with Celestion G-65 speakers. Effects are a TC Electronics G-System with a MXR Phase 90, DOD Chorus, Alesis Parametric EQ (For tweaking clean patches) and a Morley Tremonti Wah. A Pedalsnake Custom audio snake connects the rack to the pedal board and another one to hook up the stuff in the rack. The pedal board with the Wah and the TC Foot controller is by BlackKross .All effects switching and amp channel switching is handled by the G-System. An Axetrak unit is used hooked up to one of the speaker outputs for FOH sound. Stage cables by Zaolla (Ronny uses a custom 50 ft cable..). Ronny also uses a Laney TT-100 tube combo for smaller shows with a Black Kross pedal board that has a Morley wah, Digitech Digidelay and a Boss Chorus. When Ronny does clinics and trade shows when his normal rig can’t be used he uses an AMT Extreme III distortion pedal into the clean channel of what ever amp is available, A Morley Wah and a Digidelay pedal. Picks are InTune 121mm with Ronny’s Logo on them. Guitars are transported in Coffin Case Guitar trunks. Black nail polish by Hot Topic. Yes, Black is the fastest. Oh yeah, don’t forget the Ace Frehley action figure that always sits on Ronny’s live rack. It’s all about Ace….

InfluencesMy influences are all over the place since I'm a fan of all kinds of music (You should see all the different CD's in my car!) When I was young we my Dad always had music playing in the House (Lots of Beatles!!) He actually plays a little guitar and pushed my brother and I into lessons (Which neither of us were into at the time!,playing baseball and football were much cooler!!) It all changed when I got a KISS record for Christmas when I was 13.Then a few months later my Dad took the whole family to a KISS concert during their 1977 Love Gun Tour at the LA Forum (It was my first concert!).You could say that KISS is the only reason I play music today.Once I saw their live show in 1977 that was it..I knew that's what I wanted to do with my life (I'm still trying....)When I first started playing my influences were the guitar heros of yesterday when players could really play. Ace Frehley was my first guitar influence (To this day,I have an Ace action figure standing on my live guitar rack at every show I play!). After Ace I got majorly into EVH (I even got an original one pick up Charvel that I still own!!!),Shenker,Alex Lifeson ,Joe Perry,Warren Demartini,Neil Geraldo and George Lynch.I'm also a major fan of Yngwie,Bucket Head,Paul Gilbert,Steve Vai,Satch,Ron Thal (aka Bumblefoot), John Sykes and Nuno Bettencourt. My first good guitar was a brand new Ibanez Iceman that my stepmother bought me (Once again the KISS influence!) I still have the guitar to this day ,even though I have since blow torched it! I believe that it's good for your playing to be open minded about different styles of music. That's what gives you an original style of your own. That's what it's all about isn't it???
Sounds LikeEven though it's hard to compare yourself to anyone recently the press has compared me to a few players time and time again, The players I get compared to more often than not are EVH,Satch, Vai,Poison,KISS, and even Blackmore.I'm a big fan of all of the above so I guess that's a good thing!!!

Summer NAMM Preview: New Guitars from Ibanez, Tregan

by Premier Guitar

Rumors of an Ibanez reissue, plus a Ronny North Signature Guitar from Tregan

Nashville, TN(May 23, 2008) -- With less than a month until Summer NAMM, news is starting to pour out of Nashville. First up, we have it on good authority that Ibanez is planning to roll out a high-end re-issue in the RG family. Though that's about all we have to share at the moment, we'll keep you updated as the details come in, and look for videos with Ibanez from the Summer NAMM floor.

Confirmed for June is the Ronny North Signature Guitar from Tregan Guitars. The long-time Southern California instrumental rocker chose Tregan Guitars to create his signature guitar due to the company's reputation for exciting new designs and reasonably-priced quality instruments, along with luthier Greg Back’s ability to tweak a guitar to fit the player perfectly.

With its lightweight body, super fast neck and great looks, the guitar will offer features unheard of on guitars in its price range, including an original Floyd Rose Tremolo, Buzz Feiten tuning system and custom Ronny North Monster Tone pickups hand-wound in the USA by Performance Labs. The guitar will also feature a mahogany body with a maple cap and flame maple top, and a bolt on maple neck with a birds-eye maple fretboard and custom inlays. The pickups have been custom-designed for Ronny North’s Signature guitar and offer the perfect blend of tones so each note rings out true and clear. MSRP is yet to be determined.

Ronny North will be demonstrating his signature guitar in the T. G., Inc. booth 1436 at this year’s Summer NAMM. Also Demonstrating Tregan Guitars in TGI’s booth will be Flash Bathory and Skunk from Quartershackle. For more information, visit treganguitars.com, ronnynorth.com, and gregbackguitars.com.

Remember, Summer NAMM is from June 20-22, and we'll be there bringing you ongoing coverage of everything new.

Music Connection Magazine 12/7/07 through 1/6/08

As the music industry continues to morph, and the internet looms larger every day with independent artists seeking success on their own, the number of Southern California signings is slightly down from last year. Music Connection received reports of just over 60 signings in 2007. It should be noted that responses to our quest -- especially from the majors -- were notably subdued this year. Once again, we can't help but notice that the majority of signings were indie deals. Additionally, the same factors that generally get acts signed were in play: driving ambition, great songs, the right connections, and a strong live show.

Dan Dehlman contacted North after watching him for some time. Following a conversation about the label and North’s needs, North decided to get on board. The label sells music almost exclusively online, which North be-lieves is the future. His first label recording was a Christmas song, “A Day in The Moment”, released on Nov. 10, 2007.
