Chanticleer the Clever Cowboy (Andrew Shaw) is a critically-acclaimed singer-songwriter in Salt Lake City, Utah. Andrew received a 2007 SLAMMy from the City Weekly, dubbing him one of "thirty things we like about local music right now." The Utah Stateman called Chanticleer "one of Salt Lake City's best performers."
Chanticleer writes and performs sweet songs about the things that affect his subconscious: family, love, loss, distance. His sound has been honed and influenced by his insatiable appetite for new music and his participation with other musicians. During his time in Lincoln, Nebraska (where he grew up), Chanticleer played folk music in coffeehouses and sandwich shops. When he moved to Salt Lake City, he bought his first electric guitar and started the rock band, The Adonis. He currently plays with Calico, an experimental, psychedelic folk quintet, and has sat in with Band of Annuals, an outstanding alt-country group.
In February 2007, Chanticleer released his first album, "Live at Slowtrain." During 2007, he released two songs on local compilation albums: "Frosty Darling" on Slowtrain Music's "Around the Bend" compilation (a first glimpse at Chanticleer as a full band), and "Thank You for Braving the Storm" on Eden's Watchtower Records' "Faint Transmissions" (an ethereal, minimalist instrumental). These songs can be heard at the Chanticleer Virb site
December 2007, Chanticleer released his first holiday EP, "Mammuthus primigenius" (a.k.a., the Woolly Mammoth EP). The sweetness and sanctity of Christmas music has always influenced the Chanticleer sound, and "Mammuthus primigenius" is as much a tribute to the holiday genre as it is an exhibition of Chanticleer's songwriting and emerging talent as an arranger.
