Rootikal 5th of September with Aba Shanti I - the final Sunday session
On 5th of September Rootikal welcomes back the legendary Aba Shanti I for what will be the last Rootikal session on a Sunday.
After nearly two years of fantastic monthly dances we will hold the last Sunday Rootikal at East Village on 5th of September. It's been a truly great run that has seen regular appearances by the UK's heaviest selectors including David Rodigan, Channel One, Nick Manasseh, Russ Disciple, Chris Peckings, and our special guest for this last session Aba-Shanti-I. We've also been blessed to host live performances from some great artists including Linval Thompson, Gappy Ranks, Errol Bellot and the Necessary Mayhem crew.
So, from September we'll be taking a break for a couple of months and will then return for our new East Village residency on the first Friday of every other month, starting on December 3rd, which will also be the Rootikal second birthday. Moving to Friday's lets us to run until 3.30am and also means that people no longer have to deal with work the day after Rootikal.
But back to 5th of September. Anyone that has been to Carnival, University of Dub or the Blue Note sessions in the mid 90s, will be familiar with the heavy spiritual music played in an Aba Shanti I selection. From the early days when he deejayed with Jah Tubby's sound, through to recording with Blood Shanti (his brother) and to playing with his live band, The Shanti-Ites, one thing is a constant and that is the unique vibe that he brings to the dance. We at Rootikal very much look forward to that vibe on 5th September.
Aba Shanti I will be supported in the basement by Earl Gateshead and mic man Ben Cutter, whilst upstairs in the lounge Stuart Patterson and Nick B come with the revival selection.
Together they will be spinning a Rootikal selection covering all bases of righteous music..
The session kicks off early in the lounge at 2pm, with the basement opening at 7pm.
