InfluencesDetroit Reggae 45 Shoot Out Champion Photobucket It was the night everyone was waiting for the battle between all of Detroit's sound systems (or so we thought). What was billed as a clash between 13 local area sound sytems eventually became a clash between 4 sounds, Xtreme, Conquerus, Roots Rock & Untouchable. Xtreme started the judgment with Rudy Mack & Buffalo at the controls their 15 minute set was ok, nothing spectacular to really mention. Buffalo started out by making some verbal attacks against Roots Rock at one point stating that "i man ago kill Roots Rock bumbo Claut" but, no killing occured. Xtreme failed to move the crowd in this round, they played tunes that no one ever heard before in their lives. I wondered what were they thinking. Conquerus was next and sad to say more of the same, Conquerus was not prepared for this clash, at times they were confused as to which songs to play. They pretty much kept the dance on a cultural level, when they should probably have stepped up the pace with some dance tunes. Untouchable was the next sound to play their 15 minutes, and believe me it was 15 minutes of pure frustration. He started his round with "Greetings I Bring from Jah" Which had the crowd excited, but what he followed up with was unexplainable I can't even think of the name of the artist he came up with, everyone knows that "Greetings is always followed up by Super Cat's "Under Pressure" but he chose otherwise and immediately lost the crowd. Roots Rock was next and without a doubt he had the fire blazing. He started out with some strong words for the other sounds, telling Xtreme "dem a blood cloth dead under the treatment, none a unouu nuh bad like Roots Rock a bumbo cloth". The crowd was instantly energized. Roots Rock started out with some foundation tunes, Richie Spice and the likes then took the dance to another level by playing tunes like "Ghanster Rock, Dutty Whine etc." he even played a number of tunes on the Wipe Out Rhythm. After Roots Rock round ended a vote was made and Conquerus & Untouchable was voted out. Roots Rock started the round with Dennis Brown's "Love & Hate" which got the crowd delighted. Baby Cham's Ghetto Story among other big tunes on the rhythm pretty much wrapped up the dance in Roots Rock favor. When Xtreme came in there seemed to be some discontent in the Xtreme camp as Buffalo simply walked away from the turntables and left Rudy Mack to select and handle the mike. According to Buffalo, Rudy Mack was not playing what he wanted him to play and therefore he could not support what Rudy Mack was doing. Rudy Mack, however was quite good in this round. he started screamin like Fire Links making more verbal treats to Roots Rock. unfortunately he didn't make a true connection with the crowd and after the final vote was in, Roots Rock was named the detroitreggae.com "45" Shootout Champions. Big-up to Conquerus, Xtreme, Untouchable & Roots Rock for holding up the Gideon and making Detroit Shine. Source: www.detroitreggae.com

Roots Rock Sound was originally formed in the early 80’s by two individuals that loved the mechanics of the music industry as well as the sound system. Nigel A.K.A. “Jello” and Mark A.K.A. “Bagga Trees” at a young age decided to utilize both of their parent’s records by putting them together to form their very own sound system. This collaboration gave birth to the epidemic we now call Roots Rock sound. Originally the sound was called “Masterpiece” but we didn’t feel as though the name was connecting with the Caribbean community. After much evaluation and thought, we decided to change the name to Roots Rock Sound as we believed that this would enable us to captivate and connect with the Cultural Reggae crowd. Jello and Mark had dreams of building a sound system that would not only entertain the masses but also offer diversified selections in the genres that they would play. Roots Rock Sound evolved in their line up as they believed that it was essential to get a strong sense of all cultures and not just that of the reggae culture. Roots Rock doesn’t necessarily attract one set of crowd but actually has successfully geared their music to appeal to a very wide audience while providing the latest tunes, as well as the classics in the Reggae, Dancehall, and Soca. Though the sound is locally based in the Detroit Michigan area, Roots Rock haven’t stopped their. They have traveled all over the United States and Canada playing at various functions and events alongside infamous sounds such as Stone Love, Metromedia, Bass Odyssey, and Soul to Soul. The Current members of Roots Rock Sound offer a very diverse group of selection as their selectors hail from different islands in the Caribbean. Jello, MikeyGenious, and B Plus are all from Jamaica while DJ Drew is from Trinidad/Tobago. With this deadly combination, all of them bring variety in their selecting styles to the turntables; this gives Roots Rock the flavor and versatility it possesses. Along with diversity in the music arena, they possess diversity in their careers. Jello is a Robotics Engineer, Mikey Genious is an Accountant, DJ Drew is in Sales, and B Plus is a Soccer Coach. In addition, Roots Rock is involved in community activities and fundraising events, and hopes to get expand and capitalize on their talents in the future. Roots Rock is currently working on trying to branch out into producing, and sponsorship of shows and events. At the present moment, you can catch “Fire Fridays” with Roots Rock from 8pm-midnight (est.) on IRIEVIBESRADIODETROIT.COM. Roots Rock currently hosts a weekly Saturday night event, performing at the Clubhouse Tavern in Midtown Detroit.

Do you like coffee? If so, friend request the Marley Coffee Company. An organization started by Rohan Marley and Shane Whittle. This will be an online ordering company, where organically grown/Ital coffee beans will be sold. Partial proceeds will go towards building soccer fields for children in areas where the coffee beans are grown. What a great way to help children and to remember Bob, who loved his soccer. So, coffee lovers look for this site: www. myspace.
