Este hermoso descubrimiento nos fue revelado por el poeta español Federico García Lorca cuando buscaba con ahínco, entre la música y la poesía, entre las tradiciones y las costumbres populares, la esencia de su país. “Todos los viajeros están despistados —escribió—; para conocer la Alhambra de Granada, por ejemplo, antes de recorrer sus patios y sus salas, es mucho más útil, más pedagógico comer el delicioso alfajor de Zafra o las tortas alajú de las monjas, que dan, con la fragancia y el sabor, la temperatura auténtica del palacio cuando estaba vivo.” Fue al escuchar de una mujer del pueblo el canto con que arrullaba a sus pequeño que el poeta comprendió que no eran ellas quienes cantaban sino, a su través, afloraba una voz muy antigua, “una tradición viva obraba en ella y ejecutaba el mandado fielmente, como si escuchara las viejas voces imperiosas que patinaban por su sangre”. Así, el músico, el trovador, el artesano, son instrumentos que la tradición pulsa para perseverar, para seguir siendo. Pero ocurre también que en la música popular, los artistas interponen su voz, su temperamento, su personalidad, entre esa historia esencial que intenta materializarse en sonidos y la audiencia que abreva de ella; el artista interpreta los dictados de la tradición musical de su tierra y lo adereza con otros ingredientes: nuevos sentidos, nuevas geografías, nuevos tiempos. Y acaso sea precisamente de este modo, mediante la apropiación que el artista hace de ella y el enriquecimiento que le imprime, que las tradiciones y las costumbres se refrescan, sobreviven y perduran en el tiempo. Los dulces y las melodías, esos placeres donde se refugia la emoción de la historia, su luz permanente sin fechas ni hechos, son la materia prima del arte musical de Rosalía. Estudiosa profunda de las músicas de España, esta mujer de complexión menuda, al subir al escenario florece y se transforma en aquel instrumento que la historia tañe; su voz dulce —que no es la misma que la voz con la que conversa— emerge para llevarnos como en el lecho de un río, y sus dedos portentosamente ágiles igual pulsan la guitarra para arrullarnos en el flujo de sus aguas como reproducen el repiqueteo de la piedras: las panderetas que dan soporte a los aires musicales de algunas de las provincias de España. Pero no es la guitarra de España lo que escuchamos de sus manos, —y es aquí donde Rosalía le presta su propia emotividad a la artesanía musical— pues lo mismo asoman entre sus arpegios las evocativas complejidades del impresionismo de Satie, las cadencias afrutadas del Bossa Nova, las percusiones misteriosas de la música de oriente e, incluso, las progresiones que quizá reconoceríamos en el rock intelectual de Emerson, Lake and Palmer. De igual forma sucede con las melodías: Rosalía utiliza la plataforma de la canción popular e inyecta nueva vida a los antiguos cantos de cuna y de juegos infantiles de su país para crear con ellos una alquimia entre su música y sus palabras.
