Wow... so many styles, country, bluegrass, rock, blues, roots.. Emmylou Harris, The Eagles, The Judds, Ricky Skaggs, The Whites, Dixie Chicks, Patsy Cline, George Jones, Alison Krauss, Bonnie Raitt, Janis Joplin, Bad Company, Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Baby Animals, Melissa Etheridge, Jimmy Barnes, Jeff Buckley, Led Zeppelin, The Black Crowes, U2...
“I dare you!”
These were the three life changing words that began Rose Carleo’s music career.
Mary Carleo, Rose’s mum and a well respected country music promoter from Perth, encouraged her 13 year old daughter to give her first performance at a local country music club.
The young performer would go in to perform backing vocals for Jimmy Barnes during the release of his “Soul Deep” album in 2000 and her trio, Sweet Revenge, supported Vanessa Amorosi’s Perth performance during her 2000 Western Australian tour.
After working consistently as a performer in her home town of Perth, she ventured east, moving to Brisbane to explore future possibilities for her country music career.
In 2006 Rose hit the studio to record her debut EP with esteemed producer Brendan Radford. The combination of both artist and producer culminated in a product that had something for all music lovers to enjoy.
Rose’s first single, Freedom was released to radio June 2006 and was followed by Whisper later that year. The film clip for Whisper was recorded at the 2006 Toyota Country Music Muster in Gympie and was shown to all passengers travelling on VirginBlue via their Inflight screens for several months. Rose went on to be a finalist in the 2007 Toyota Star Maker competition during the Tamworth country music festival.
Mid 2007 saw Rose teaming up again with producer Brendan Radford for the release her album Everything I Need.
Co-writing tracks for the album with 2007 Golden Guitar winner, Drew McAlister, the first single from the album, Til I Find Me Again reached the top 40 on the Country Music Channel (CMC) chart.
Drew also made a special appearance on the third single to be released, Sometimes You Just Know. The duet saw Rose and Drew receive a Golden Guitar Vocal Collaboration finalist nomination and win the TIARA Award for Vocal Collaboration of the Year both in January 2008. The track also jumped into the top 10 on the Country Tracks Chart.
The track Eyes Don’t Lie reached the coveted number 1 position on the Sounds Like Café chart – a collation of the most played tracks in coffee shops and restaurants throughout Australia. Other singles to be released off the album included It’s Not Me It’s You which featured in the Top 50 on the CMC Chart, Some Kind Of Miracle appeared in the Top 20 Country Tracks Chart, I’ve Just Got The Blues and most recently, Everything I Need.
Rose’s rich and soulful voice has been heard at many festivals throughout Australia including the Toyota Country Music Muster, Boyup Brook Country Music Festival, Bridgetown Blues Festival, QUT Urban Country Music Festival and the Mildura Country Music Festival.
Rose’s songs are contemporary tales of taking control, of accepting that things aren’t always what you hoped, and moving on.
“When I’m writing songs, I look for catalysts — maybe things that have happened to me, but often stuff I’ve observed in other people’s lives.”
“The crucial thing is to find a universal message in the song, something everyone can relate to,” Rose said.
“I see Everything I Need as a really positive album, even though it explores a wide range of emotions.”
“It’s about taking control and living live to the fullest — about making the most of where you are and what you have.”
