  • Bio

.."It's no wonder Cousins is the object of audience affection....".. - The Boston Globe .... .Rose Cousins has burst into bloom on The Send Off, a sophisticated follow-up to her 2006 ECMA-winning debut, If You Were For Me. On her sophomore release, the Halifax, NS-based singer-songwriter breaks away from traditional folkiness to experiment with wilder sounds and a broader spectrum of emotional colours. She brings an excellent supporting cast to this second effort, including producer/guitarist Luke Doucet, cellist Matt Brubeck and backing vocalists Kathleen Edwards, Jenn Grant and Melissa McLelland. The album opens with the exquisite "I Were The Bird," the plucked strings and a touch of reverb elevating Cousins' luminous vocals to cruising altitude. From the electric blare of "Maybe I Knew" to the lullaby simplicity of "Young Once" and the cheeky jazziness of "Celebrate," the album weaves back and forth between electric and acoustic, from heartache to intense joy, with inventive arrangements that enhance the beauty of Cousins' fresh, sincere compositions. Bio:

"It's no wonder Cousins is the object of audience affection...."
- The Boston Globe

Rose Cousins has a knack for stirring the heart. With a blend of her journey and thoughtful observation, her songs tell subtle stories open enough to belong to anyone.

Her genuine writing and unaffected voice have earned her great respect and recognition locally and internationally. Highly sought after, Rose has lent her voice to recordings by such artists as: Matt Mays, Jill Barber, In-Flight Safety, The Heavy Blinkers and Edie Carey.

Rose often has audiences in tears one moment and belly laughs the next. With expressive arrangements, warm guitar and effortless vocals, one would hardly believe shes on stage alone.

"...acoustic music in its purest formCousins' vocals are clean, folky
and powerful, yet at times delicate... "
- Umbrella Music (Toronto)

Her songs and charming performances have brought Rose across Canada an south of the border. She has shared stages with Canadian greats David Francey, Lynn Miles, Joel Plaskett, Bob Snider, Emm Gryner & Valdy and U.S. friends John Gorka, Darrell Scott, Edie Carey, Rose Polenzani & The Weepies.

Following her two EPs (Only So Long 2002, Miles to Go 2003) comes her highly anticipated first full length recording. If You Were For Me is a collection of songs that marks the beginning of the next phase in this eminent songwriters career. Recorded at the legendary CBC Studio H, (Juno Winner Garret Mason, Jill Barber) in Halifax, NS, the albums strength lies in the writing, performances by seasoned recording artists and the vision of producer/engineer, Karl Falkenham. If You Were For Me draws on influences from traditions of folk, bluegrass, pop and Appalachian music.

"I've waited for the right opportunity for my first full length album and I am fortunate to have received such overwhelming support from the team at CBC..."

Rose has created a home for her new record by forming her own label Old Farm Pony Records (drawn from the first track and oldest song on the album)- which she hopes will be home to more artists in years to come.

"her songs reflect that small town feel, warm and heartfelt and somehow familiar.."
- 88.9 WERS FM Emerson College Boston, MA

"Cousins writes songs strong on story, melody, and honest observations...
that demand an unaffected but beautiful voice."
- Lifestyle Nova Scotia
