Rosemarie Hurst was born in Sussex, England and came to Ontario, Canada when she was 8 and has been living in BC for the past 11 years.
She is a singer/songwriter and visual artist. She has had varied careers from modelling, retail sales, administrative work, instructor, to owning her own image consulting business where she advised individuals and recording artists.
As a youngster she ran the Cilla Black fan club of Canada and got to meet Cilla in New York on the Ed Sullivan show. She met the late Luciano Pavarotti and was interviewed on the radio with her Mum about it. She also met Paul McCartney in Toronto in the wee hours of the morning when the Beatles came the second or third time to Canada. He was naughty, she was nice and the rest is a long, long story.
Rosemarie is a member of Music BC, The Songwriter's Association of Canada, SOCAN and Delta Arts Council for which she has volunteered. She's had the delightful experience of swimming with the dolphins in Marathon, Florida.
Her interest in the poetry and life of Canadian poet E. Pauline Johnson greatly influenced her own writing and way of looking at the world. Other notable writers that inspired her were Kahlil Gibran, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, the Beatles, Phil Ochs, John Prine, Gordon Lightfoot, Lao Tse, Daniel Lanois, Stephen Fearing, John Bottomley and Jann Arden, amongst many others.
Rosemarie came to Vancouver in November 1997 from Ancaster, near Hamilton, Ontario. Her big musical break came with the BC Festival of the Arts call for entry for singer/songwriter’s. One of the songs she sent them was ‘Eyes of the Angels’. She was one of 14 applicants out of 100 chosen to perform her own music, this time, at the Herald Street Theatre in Victoria, B.C. in front of 250 people. She was honoured to have shared the stage with the likes of Stephen Fearing and Colleen Eccleston.
Rosemarie is an avid photographer who has her sold many of her photos and photo art cards. Two of them are of E. Pauline Johnson’s cairn, Stanley Park, Vancouver and are on display at Pauline’s birthplace, Chiefswood Museum, Ohsweken, Ontario. She has had a photography exhibit this past Feb/08 at the Arts Corner and sells her work at Delta Arts Council's gift shops at Ladner Pioneer Library and North Delta's Art Space, Ladner's Market Days, Gallery in the Garden, Summerfest and Rivermania.
Rosemarie had some of her framed photos at Delta Arts Council's Arts Space in North Delta for the month of Oct/08 where she sold one of her large Raccoon photos. She had a small exhibit also for the month of Nov/08 at Ladner Pioneer Library's 'Arts Corner' which will be repeated for Nov/09 and possibly into Dec/09. In December/08 she had another successful monthly exhibit at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre. There is going to be a gallery exhibit at Tsawwassen Arts Centre in Feb. 2010 and also be some upcoming music and artistic gigs, so stay tuned.
A book of philosphical poetry coupled with her nature photographs is in the works. Rosemarie firmly believes that success is not fame nor egotism but the fulfilling of one's own personal dreams.
