Born 1978, Rossella Piccinno studied Documentary and Experimental Cinematography at the DAMS, Bologna University, graduating in 2004 with distinction. In her thesis on Carmelo Bene’s “Nostra Signora dei Turchi” she was able to combine a passion for the cinema with a longstanding enthusiasm for, and involvement in, the theatre. Further study at the Palazzina, Imola, gave her a postgraduate qualification in video making. This led to her first professional experience, in animation, working for Achtoons. In 2005 she began her career as director with the short “Interno Sei”, soon going on to produce and direct, in collaboration with the Italian Red Cross, the documentary “Mauritania: Ancient Libraries in the Desert”, which has been received with critical acclaim at a number of national and international film festivals. In “Occhi negli occhi: memorie di viaggio” (”first prize as best travel documentary” to the Video Festival of Imperia) the author aims to convey the magic of the experience of the 14,000-kilometer 4×4 journey from the motorways of Europe to the heart of the desert, in an intimate and evocative cine-diary which invites the viewer to consider the way different cultures interact. Rossella subsequently returned to her native Salento where she realizes “To my Darling”, a video-elegy in memory of the artists Norman mommens and Patience Gray, faced also themes arising from the lot of immigrants in her report “Voices of Native and Migrant Women” (Prize “Visions of Territory” 2007). Developing from this experience, her new documentary film “Hanna & Violka”, currently in post-production, sounds the alarm at the plight of many live-in carers and home helps, poorly-paid immigrants working throughout Southern Italy with few rights and subject to exploitation and isolation. Also in the pipeline are projects related to the arts, music, history, defence of the environment, and stories of individuals maintaining a critical stance in the face of the world.

Nata nel 1978, si è laureata con lode in Cinematografia Documentaria e Sperimentale nel 2004 al DAMS di Bologna e si è successivamente diplomata come “Tecnico di produzioni video” presso “la Palazzina” di Imola. Muove le sue prime esperienze lavorando nei cartoni animati e debutta alla regia nel 2005 con il corto “Interno sei”. Pochi mesi dopo dirige il documentario “Mauritania: città-biblioteche nel deserto”, selezionato in prestigiosi festival nazionali e internazionali. Su quest’esperienza realizza "Occhi negli occhi, memorie di viaggio", primo premio al video festival città d’Imperia come miglior documentario naturalistico, nel 2008. Ritornata in Salento, sua terra d’origine, realizza To my Darling, una video-elegia in memoria degli artisti scomparsi Norman Mommens e Patience Gray, e affronta con forza i temi sociali legati al mondo dell’immigrazione nel reportage "Voci di donne Native e Migranti", (Premio visioni del territorio 2007) da cui ha origine il suo nuovo film documentario “Hanna e Violka”, attualmente in post-produzione.

Hanna Korszla è una delle 1.700.000 badanti presenti in Italia, vive in Salento da tre anni insieme a Gina e Antonio, un anziano ultraottantenne malato di Alzheimer, di cui si occupa costantemente. Violka è sua figlia, diciannovenne polacca senza lavoro. Le vite di Hanna e Violka si incontrano come in uno specchio scambiando i propri ruoli nella cura di ‘Ntoni. E’così che Hanna può finalmente ritornare in Polonia a riabbracciare la sua famiglia confrontandosi con un presente e con un passato difficile, mentre Violka, badante-bambina, fa i conti con un soggiorno che non si rivela essere proprio “una vacanza”. “Hanna e Violka” è un film sulla trasformazione, quella privata delle protagoniste a confronto con differenti ruoli, e quella sociale dell’Italia che invecchia, della famiglia che cambia, delle straniere venute dall’Est per diventare quasi “di famiglia” . E’ un film sulla migrazione di oggi e sulla straordinaria capacità delle donne di affrontare con forza e ironia le dure sfide del quotidiano.

Hanna Korszla, one of Italy’s 1,700,000 immigrant carers, has lived in the Salento for three years, looking after Antonio - who is over 80 and suffers from Alzheimer’s - day and night. Violka, her 19-year-old Polish daughter, is out of work. She takes on Hanna’s role as ‘Ntoni’s carer, enabling her mother to return to Poland to visit family. There Hanna comes to terms with a difficult past and a problematical present, while Violka, extremely young to look after such an old man, gets to grips with a stay in Italy which is anything but a holiday.

Come ieri c’è chi è costretto a lasciare la propria casa per andare a lavorare all’estero. Molto spesso in Italia le donne immigrate di oggi sono badanti degli emigranti di ieri. In questo film il passato e il presente della migrazione s’incontrano nelle vite e nei ricordi di Hanna, badante polacca immigrata in Italia, e Antonio, ex immigrato in Svizzera negli anni della gioventù e attualmente vecchio e malato di Alzheimer. “Come ieri” è una riflessione intima, uno sguardo privato sul particolare che si concede un respiro più ampio, che cerca di aprire degli spiragli su quello che non si può dire tutto in un racconto, su ciò che in cinque minuti si può solo evocare. È un film con una dedica personale ma è anche dedicato, con amore, con dolore, con rispetto a chi da sempre è costretto a emigrare.

Like yesterday there is who is forced to leave his home to work abroad. Often in Italy many immigrant women of today are carers of migrants of yesterday. In this film the past and the present of migration meet in the lives and memories of Hanna, carer Polish immigrant in Italy, and Antonio, ex-immigrant in Switzerland in the years of youth and now old and sick of Alzheimer's disease. "Like yesterday" is an intimate reflection, a private eye on the detail that gives a bigger breadth. It is a film with a private dedication but is also dedicated, with love, with pain, with respect to who has always been forced to emigrate.

Le donne del forum Native e Migranti di Lecce affrontano in questa inchiesta i temi della difficile condizione degli immigrati nel Salento, soprattutto per quel che riguarda i diritti del lavoro e di cittadinanza. Per la prima volta in questo video viene denunciata la durissima situazione di segregazione e sfruttamento vissuta da molte badanti all’interno dei nuclei familiari che le ospitano. Tutte queste donne esprimono il loro desiderio di sentirsi cittadine a pieno titolo del posto in cui vivono, con pari diritti e pari dignità rispetto agli altri, a tutti coloro che, non va dimenticato, hanno nella loro esperienza personale o familiare un passato legato alla migrazione.

This video, realised in collaboration with Variemani (an independent creative collective) and Naemi (Lecce’s immigrant and indigenous women’s forum), addresses the themes of the difficulties faced by immigrants living in the Salento, particularly focussing on the working conditions experienced by women and the problems related to legal residential status. Those interviewed speak of the difficulties of finding decent housing or properly paid work “on the books”, and appeal for recognition of the social isolation that live-in carers often suffer. All the women aspire to acceptance as fully-fledged citizens of the place where they live, with equal rights and the same dignity as others… all the more so, let us not forget, because so many of these others have themselves experienced, in their own lives or those of close relatives, a past marked by emigration.

Norman Mommens e Patience Gray erano una coppia di artisti che, dopo molto vagare tra L’Europa e il Mediterraneo, nel 1970 decisero di stabilirsi nel Salento, verso il capo di Leuca, dove trascorsero l’ultima fase della loro vita in un clima di creatività e di felice isolamento. Patience, di origini inglesi, è nota al mondo sassone come colei che ha portato nel Regno Unito la cucina continentale; tra i suoi libri più famosi si possono ricordare “Plat du jour” e “Honey from a Weed”, testi alchemici in cui la cucina si mescola ai racconti di viaggio e alle riflessioni antropologiche. Norman, di origini fiamminghe, prima di incontrare Patience all’età di cinquant’anni, era stato sposato con la nipote del celebre evoluzionista Charles Darwin; è noto soprattutto come scultore e illustratore, ma era anche astronomo, filosofo e scrittore. Sono stati rinvenuti solo recentemente 19 libri d’artista assolutamente inediti; erano i regali che Norman faceva a Patience, la sua musa, ogni anno per il suo compleanno, nel giorno di halloween, a partire dal 1978. In questo film si porta alla luce questo tesoro cercando di evocare l’atmosfera di amore e pace creativa in cui i due artisti hanno vissuto a contatto con la natura nella loro casa-laboratorio a Spigolizzi.

Flemish sculptor Norman Mommens and his companion, writer and jeweller Patience Gray, moved to the Basso Salento, Finibus Terrae, in 1970. They lived in an ancient masseria without electricity, running water or phone, dedicating themselves to an almost monastic regime of creative work and agricultural labour. Every year between winemaking and the olive harvest, Norman devoted the month of October to producing a hand-made book to give to Patience for her birthday, Halloween. The first, inspired by a month with two new moons (the second falling on the 31st), took the form of an illustrated diary, recording events and thoughts of the day. The second new moon is clearly an idealised portrait of his muse. Subsequent books include illustrated poems, plays, parables, autobiographical scenes and comic stories. These treasures almost no-one ever saw. They were her secret, stored in the bottom of a large wooden chest. In To My Darling Marco-the-Mime reveals a selection of these unique gifts. To complete this modest memorial to two greatly loved artists, the shots of the books are interspersed with archive film of Norman and Patience, black and white photos, and scenes of Masseria Spigolizzi as it is today.

Il tramonto dorato del sole tra le morbide dune del Sahara è l'incipit di "Occhi negli Occhi - Memorie di viaggio", un'opera intima, viscerale, in cui l'autrice si svela offrendo allo spettatore una pagina del proprio diario e invitandolo a guardare. "Occhi negli occhi" è un richiamo alla visione, un tuffo nello sguardo dell'autrice su un altro mondo, l'Africa, e anche l'incontro straordinario con gli occhi di chi da questo mondo ci guarda.

Dichiarazione dell’autrice sul Film: Questo film risponde all’esigenza di esprimere, a livello personale, l’incontro con un mondo “altro” come momento dialettico e come spazio interiore di riflessione su se stessi e sul mondo. Dopo aver dato spazio in modo, per così dire, “oggettivo” al problema dell’abbandono delle antiche biblioteche nel deserto, ho sentito la necessità di affrontare l’esperienza che avevo avuto di quel viaggio da un punto di vista più privato. “Occhi negli Occhi – memorie di viaggio” è solo un tentativo di racconto, una confessione intima, una necessità profonda con la quale dovevo assolutamente confrontarmi.

The golden sun setting between the soft dunes of the Sahara is the starting point of “Eyes in the Eyes– recollections of a journey”, a personal and deeply felt account in which the author reveals to the viewer a page of her intimate diary. “Occhi negli Occhi” (Eyes in the Eyes) invites the spectator to open his eyes and share what the author sees of another world, Africa. It is a meeting of the eyes between those who are there to look and those who return the gaze.

Author’s statement: This film was made in response to the need I felt to express on a personal level my encounter with “another planet”, both as dialectic moment and as basis for internal reflection on oneself and on the world. Having tried to treat the problem of the abandon of the ancient libraries in the desert in an ‘objective’ manner, I felt the need to recount the experience of my journey from a more personal point of view. “Eyes in the Eyes – recollections of a journey” is an attempt to tell a story, a personal confession, my need to come to terms with myself.

La Mauritania è stata, per molti secoli, un centro d’irradiamento culturale in cui la propagazione e l’acquisizione del sapere dominavano la vita degli uomini e costituivano un’attività di fondamentale importanza. Le vestigia storiche di città antiche come Chinguetti, Ouadane, Tichit e Oualata, classificate dall’Unesco Patrimonio Mondiale dell’Umanità, sono una delle espressioni visibili di questa enorme ricchezza culturale. Posizionate nel cuore del Sahara occidentale, queste antichissime oasi nacquero inizialmente per servire le rotte carovaniere legate al grande commercio trans-sahariano, ben presto divennero centri d’insegnamento religioso, dove fiorirono moschee e mederse, scuole coraniche, la cui fama indiscussa si diffuse sino alla lontana Arabia. In questo quadro particolare sorsero numerose biblioteche, le cui migliaia di manoscritti, riguardanti più campi del pensiero umano, dalla religione alla matematica, richiamarono per secoli intellettuali e studiosi da tutto il mondo arabo ed alimentarono la nascita di un’intensa attività editoriale. La generalizzazione della cultura consentì ai cittadini di ogni classe sociale l’accesso al mondo del sapere, tanto che intorno al XVI secolo, in ogni casa di queste città si trovava un erudito. Attualmente, l’abbandono degli antichi traffici trans-sahariani, unito ad una siccità senza precedenti nel Sahara, hanno causato il declino e l’abbandono progressivo di queste capitali nel deserto. Ormai, in questi luoghi, non restano che poche anime ad abitare quello che è solo il ricordo di questo glorioso passato mentre le dune avanzano inesorabilmente minacciando la vita stessa degli uomini. Con questo documentario, realizzato in collaborazione con la Croce Rossa Italiana, andiamo alla scoperta di queste antiche città-biblioteche e lanciamo l’allarme di una civiltà assediata dal deserto.

Mauritania was for many centuries a hub of culture in which the acquisition and spread of knowledge was an activity of fundamental importance. The remains of cities like Chinguetti, Ouadane, Tichit and Oualata, classified as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO, are one of the visible expressions of this rich culture. Situated in the heart of the western Sahara, these ancient oases grew to serve the caravan routes linked to trans-Saharan commerce. Soon they became centres of religious instruction, where mosques and madrassas, the Koranic schools, flourished. Their undisputed fame spread as far as distant Arabia. This was the setting for the foundation of numerous libraries. The thousands of manuscripts collected in them, covering fields of thought from religion to mathematics, drew intellectuals and students from all over the Arab world and encouraged intense publishing activity. The spread of this book culture gave all classes access to the world of knowledge and by the 16th century there was an erudite scholar in every household. Dwindling traffic on the trans-Saharan trade routes coupled with unprecedented drought caused the decline and progressive abandonment of these capitals of the desert. Today only a few souls remain in these places, inhabiting what is a shadow of their glorious past while the dunes advance inexorably, threatening even human life. With this documentary, made in collaboration with the Italian Red Cross, we set out to discover these ancient library cities and sound the alarm for a civilisation under siege from the desert.
