I had a lot of help from the following musicians who contributed their talents:

Gary Barratt(world’s greatest drummer!) who has played with me since 1982
Bob Arlidge – your smooth double bass adds a LOT to this album
Jess Lindeman - your beautiful Cello ensures this is “Not Just Ragtime”
Spencer Evans – great clarinet improvisations on Little Bird
Tim Roberts – your sax suggestions complement the driving nature of Kidd’s Boogie

Influences

Oddly enough, as a teenager I was influenced by Queen, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Yes, and particulary the earlier Elton John albums. I still have tremendous respect for these artists.

After university, I joined a band called City Limits with the Rodenburg brothers (Real Shiny Records). I met Gary Barratt through David Rodenburg. Gary and I formed "Doctor Drums and the Ragtime Kidd" and have played together since then.

When I first became interested in ragtime, I studied under Toronto artists Bob Fenton and John Arpin. Other ragtime performers I really like are William Bolcom, Roger Shields and James Levine. For Boogie I like Albert Ammons, Pete Johnson, Meade Lux Lewis, Errol Garner, Dr. John and my current favourite is Michael Kaeshammer. This guy is great!

I hope this album will introduce a once popular style of music that you may be unfamiliar with. Tell your friends, maybe this music will have a renaissance!

Sounds Like

Since I have many influences, I'd hate to say who I sound like exactly. I'd say a bit of Dr. John, Scott Cushnie (Professor Piano), Doug Riley, Ray Charles, Albert Ammons, Pete Johnson, Micheal Kaeshammer and even a little Jerry Lee Lewis.

   About Ross MacLachlan

In anticipation of the vitality and energy that President Barack Obama will bring to the United States of America, I offer this free download for everyone to enjoy.

Obama Vitality Rag

Ragtime is truly an American music that originated before the Great Depression. In the face of the current political and economic situation there have been many references to this period of time and to the first 100 days after President Franklin Roosevelt's inauguration and the “New Deal” he pledged and delivered to the American people. President Barack Obama has overcome enormous obstacles to get where he is today and yet he faces even bigger challenges. People around the world are celebrating the first black president and eagerly anticipating the events of the next days and months ahead.

I hope you enjoy this tune!

Here's a look at Kidd's Boogie live at Currie Hall in Kingston ON, Canada

hey there, Ross MacLachlan!

well, it has been a long and winding road, and an even longer time coming, but my debut CD, I Remember, is FINALLY HERE!!! YAY!!!!!

to celebrate, American HeartBeat Records(tm) has arranged a FREE DOWNLOAD of Now Is The Time in exchange for a valid email address. Now Is The Time is a brand new, upbeat song I wrote: we are living in turbulent times. suddenly it is okay to be greedy and heartless? no way! a song of hope for our future, a new vision of America and the world.

we have a bunch of exciting things planned to kick this whole thing off, and we need to get a better picture of who our friends are, so the FREE DOWNLOAD form will ask you a few questions, like, what is your country and nearest major city. it all takes maybe 15 seconds.

anyhoo, the FREE DOWNLOAD, and the FUN, begins at www.JAETCHISON.com

I look forward to getting to know you a little better, and I thank you SO VERY MUCH for your friendship and support!

please tell your friends about JAETCHISON.com, and ask them to sign up for the email list, too! FUN things are coming up!!

peace from Atlanta, Georgia, USA,

J.A. Etchison

RadioIndy.com review of Get ready to boogie woogie to "Not Just Ragtime" by Ross MacLachlan. This album is packed full of foot tappin', smile enducing songs. Mr. MacLachlan is a veteran of Jazz festivals and venues around the world and his piano skills are superior. The album offers original tracks as well as a few classics. The musicianship and recording quality are very good. All together this album is a ton of fun. Highlights include "Kidd's Boogie," with its great horn arrangement and cool breakdown. "Possum and Taters" is the true classic as far as ragtime goes. "Let 'Em Jump" is down home and dirty with a nice deep rolling boogie bass line. If you like Scott Joplin, you will love this one.
