Ross is a Sydney-based, freelance musician & producer, writer & reviewer, singer/songwriter & singer/coverer, having performed and worked with a number of bands and duos. Ross's tastes are wide and varied and reflect his deep love for great music. Ross also works as an arts librarian.
Ross is ostensibly a self-taught musician, taking up piano lessons later in life and completing a music-major within an arts degree.
Ross loves the passion and fervour of Paul Weller..."Weller has worked for what he's got, I believe in that...it's funny when I read a biography on Weller because I notice we have a lot in common: similar personality types, our dads were both brickies and mums were cleaners, our dads had 'big' grey hair, and we both grew up in a Victorian terrace on a main road - my mum still lives there now."
Ross also has a sensitive side. "I used to love Nick Drake but now I enjoy his music at face value, I think I got too deeply into it and it did a number on my head. More recently Eva Cassidy has come to be my greatest musical hero, the sort of person she was, and that earthy/healing quality in her music, which was sort of perfect. That's a quality I like to maintain in my music-making."
And of Ross' own music??
"...really my influences are found in the musicality. My lyrics are influenced by everything really, there is a sharp poetic bent I suppose, but plenty of melody and chord changes! I think 'Ride' is your classic pop/rock song, 'Sea in June' is my favourite for its delicacy, that musically was influenced by 'Adiemus: Songs of Sanctuary', a slight Islander feel. These songs are on my current CD 'Sea in June'.
Ross is currently collaborating with pianist/singer-songwriter ZaraMeow who together are developing a kind of burlesque cabaret-punk live act. Ross also works with the Brigette Ember Duo, who with Brigette are performing an Eva Cassidy Acoustic show. Other albums Ross has been involved with are 'Candlewood' and Velvet Road's 'Saturday Morning'.
Ross does solo gigs around Sydney and loves to throw in an eclectic selection of covers mixed in with his originals, such as 'You do something to me' by Paul Weller, 'Plaza' by Don Walker, 'Come a long way' by Kate McGarrigle, 'Birds' by Neil Young etc etc. Ross's favourite aspect of music is live performance, and performs on bass with Velvet Road and other bands occasionally.
Ross's other passions include earth issues, alternative media, nature, botany, cafes & parks, walking and health, good beer, and acoustic guitars ("mixing earth with music, perfect!"). Ross dislikes television, tabloid, and populist sports.
ROSS LOVES AUSTRALIAN-MADE ACOUSTIC GUITARS!!! "I'm very fond of American Maple and Rosewood of course though our Blackwood and Queensland Maple are contenders for some of the best tonewoods on the planet...and bunya pine makes a fantastic top, a curlier and wilder sound than spruce which is usually a very 'proper' sounding top".
Any highlights thus far...?
"Well, plenty I suppose but meeting the McGarrigles after a concert backstage at the Enmore Theatre in February 2005 was a personal buzz...Kate may be 60+ but she's still a spunk - and IMO one of the greatest songwriters on Earth...but it was funny meeting them on a grungy inner-city back street in Sydney on a balmy summer's night...sort of contrasts to the snowy Franco-Montreal image they and their music gives off...anyway, great girls they are!"
