"FABULOUS! KILLIN'! SOOOOOOOOOO MUSICAL... he floored me... loved what he threw on the canvas," -LA Drummer Steve Barnes
Originally from Fargo, North Dakota, Ross is a drummer/composer/arranger currently living in New York City (Brooklyn). Born with two highly musical parents--John, a wonderful jazz trumpet player, and Marlys, a gifted pianist--Ross was exposed to music at an early age. He began playing the trumpet at age 5, studying with his father for years until he discovered his true musical voice at age 13: the drumset.
After several years of being self-taught on the drums, and playing in various progressive rock and metal bands, Ross began studying with one of North Dakota's finest jazz drummers and vibraphonists, Michael Blake, who was the director of Jazz and Percussion at the University of North Dakota. Ross also studied for two summers at the International Music Camp at the International Peace Gardens, under fantastic musicians and educators Ryan Korb and Tim Froncek, each time receiving the Outstanding Jazz Musician Award.
Ross went on to receive his Bachelors of Music in Jazz Studies at the world-renowned University of North Texas, where he spent four years studying with master musician and educator Ed Soph, as well as two years in the Grammy-Nominated One O'Clock Lab Band under the direction of Neil Slater. He can be heard with them on the albums Lab 2007, Lab 2008, and Live at Blues Alley. The band also did a farewell European tour for Neil Slater during the summer of 2008, where they performed at the Montreaux, Vienne, North Sea, and Umbria jazz festivals.
