I can't say it's been a boring existence. Weird Zelig-like moments have happened frequently in my checkered career: playing Green Onions with Duck Dunn, Steve Cropper, and Steve Potts....at a Radisson Hotel bar called "Players". Backing Rev. Al Green on the National Anthem at a kickboxing match, North Hall, Memphis...in the wrong key. Backing Charlie Rich for an Elvis weekend at the Showboat in Atlantic City, with Carl Perkins and Roy Orbison. Did a hand-double for the trailer for the Jerry Lee Lewis movie "Great Balls Of Fire", later the Killer was really nice, shook my bleeding hand. Didn't meet Elvis, as he died as I was en route to Memphis for the first time in '77 (my mom cried), but I did write a song called "Me & Elvis" that was a minor hit for my band Human Radio. I hope all Memphis musicians learned the lesson at my expense: don't be a band from Memphis that writes a catchy tune with "Elvis" in the title. Thank yuh verr much. David Kahne produced our eponymous for Columbia Records in 1990. It actually did pretty well for a new band, but we soon got dropped. Grunge made a clean sweep, Human Radio bowed out. Steve Earle signed me to his label E-Squared where I made "Umpteen". Went back to Memphis and joined Big Ass Truck, produced a bunch of cool bands, held down Thursday night at the Blue Monkey with Steve Selvidge and Harry Peel (later Jon Wires), made "Dwight" thanks to Nashvegas playa Paul Worley & Don Mann at Memphis Records. Snagged the Peter Frampton keyboard/guitar chair for a hot minute and used it as the impetus to make a life change, moving the family to the rural Hudson Valley region of New York. Rosendale, that is. Now Jamaine and I have an arts and creative lifestyle magazine called Roll, and I still play with several bands...primarily Voodelic. The kids? You should see what they're up to....
