About me:
BIOGRAPHY
The italian composer, Nino Rota, was born in Milan in 1911 and died in Rome in 1979. In 1919 he began studying the piano with his mother, and at the age of eight he started to compose. He entered the Milan Conservatory in 1923 where he was a pupil of Delachi, Orefice and Bas. Later he studied privately with Pizzetti and then with Casella in Rome, where he received a diploma in composition at the Accademia di S Cecilia in 1930.
In 1937 he took an arts degree at Milan University and later went on to join the Bari Conservatory as a teacher of harmony and composition.
Well acquainted with new musical developments from his youth (during which he enjoyed a long personal friendship with Stravinksy), Rota followed a quite different path in his own music, retaining the supremacy of melody, a tonality free of harmonic complexity, established patterns of rhythm and form, and a concept of music as spontaneous, direct expression.
He had particular success with two operas - Il cappello di paglia di Firenze, and La visita meravigliosa. But he owed his international renown largely to his scores for the cinema, many of them composed for the films of Fellini.
