The usually feisty Rox becomes cool, calm and surprisingly collected on stage. “It’s like my second self takes over….and I just do what comes naturally – sing.” And sing she certainly can!
Although it’s obvious that she’s taken the majority of her vocal guidance from artists such as Etta James, Gladys Knight, Betty Wright and Karen Carpenter it’s also clear that she’s inspired by the guys too. “Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder and Michael McDonald have been real inspirations to me vocally” she says “they sing with such veracity, direct from the soul…I like to think that’s where I’m coming from.”
She describes her latest offering, ‘What I meant to say,’ as soul-soaked, feel-good pop. Twelve songs, she considers to be the soundtrack to her life so far.
The album took nearly 5 years to make! Rox tells us why…
“Talk about overcoming obstacles! We deciding to use the farmhouse we were renting, in Kent, as the place to write & record the ‘blueprints’ for the tracks on the album. I got a virus which affected my larynx, just as we began writing together - I kept singing on it while I was ill and lost my voice! It took just over 2 yrs to get it back…which was a nightmare! I had to keep re-arranging stuff to suit my ever changing voice....anyway it made me think about what I very nearly lost…I’m glad to have my voice back. It’s not as pure as it was before, it’s got more guts - it’s definitely a bit dirtier! As far the album is concerned, I’m really, really happy with it. The songs have had time to evolve and mature – like a good whisky! ….talking of whisky…”
In terms of today’s market, Rox’s voice and material sit comfortably between the raw, organic, grit of Amy Winehouse and Lucie Silvas' radio-friendly, transatlantic approach. A void, Rox is primed to fill.
