Roxie's Roost is one of the most unique restaurant/bars anywhere. You really have to see it to believe it.
We are located on Hwy. 10, outside of Tahlequah, Oklahoma, under Lover's Leap cliff on the scenic Illinois River.
The Illinois River is the largest camping and canoeing destination in Oklahoma. Tahlequah is home to Northeastern State University and is the Capital of the Cherokee Nation.
Roxie's Roost was first opened by Roxie Wagers as the Buzzards Roost in 1988. Roxie started his Bar B-Q catering business in 1969 and opened Roxie's Bar B-Q in the early 70's in Tahlequah. The old restaurant was a Tasty Freeze which was located on South Muskogee Ave. The old location has been torn down but the foundation still remains and is a parking lot just south of Mazzio's Pizza.
Roxie slowly built onto the old Tasty Freeze building. He added on a indoor dining area around the front of the building and extended the back of the building enclosing an indoor walk-in cooler and a meat smoking pit room off the back of the walk-in.
The new business, Buzzards Roost, was at first just a little country store that sold Roxie's Bar B-Q and river supplies for the camping industry. After a couple of years Roxie acquired a beer license and built a cabana in the back yard next to the water fall.
The Roost has seen many stages of development. Each year something was added. Decks were built, a cabana was enclosed, a cement floor was made with a metal roof that extended the length of the original building, over the old cabana (bar). The cement slab became the dance floor and band room. In 2003, after 10 years of presenting live music, an indoor stage was built, real walls were built, big windows replaced some of the plywood walls and a new room (the pool table room) was built.
In 2000 a new outdoor stage, which sits under the 150 ft. rock face which borders the east side of the property, was built after more property was acquired on the north end of the property. In 2005 the stage was covered and in 2006 was expanded again.
We sometimes say that we kept expanding the place to hold the growing crowds that Jason Boland and the Stragglers kept bringing. Jason Boland and the Stragglers are a national touring act who helped propel Red Dirt Music to a national level.
Over the years Roxie's Roost has consistently hosted the best regional and national touring acts.
Roxie's is now more of a music venue than a restaurant but we still serve up Roxie's famous Bar B-Q at large concert events during the summer for the tourist season. also there is nightly barfood on the weekends during the summer season. from buffalo style chicken wings, to bbq, to burgers... menu changes weekly and per show.
You can also find Roxie and his Bar B-Q at the Tulsa State Fair. Roxie's is the oldest vendor at the Fair and we have been selling the best smoked meat sandwiches and turkey legs for over 30 years.
If you need a party catered, if you need a place to have a party catered, or if you just want to come out and hear some great live music in a beautiful setting, look us up. you can even tent out in a backlot if so needed.
We are proud to be the site of one of the most scenic music venues anywhere!
Please come visit and see for yourself!
