Influences
Well, What can you say?...A very diverse range of influences from an eclectic bunch of musicians...anything from reggae, dub and 2 tone to Free party sounds, Raw dirty funk, Jazz, electro, breaks and soul from producers, multi-instrumentalists, arrangers and players!
Sounds Like
'Fully-blown soulful tropical gangster-type sound'
'This is a band that will keep you up on the dance floor dancing in to the small hours until your feet are numb and your clothes are soaked through with sheer joy and abandonment' - (Leftlion)
'Royal Gala blend hot-steppin' ska with hard hitting soul and percussive loops to create a non-pretentious funk hybrid that could start a revolution' - (Scene Magazine)
“Great Ska brass section and skanking guitar work, topping the pile is a superb empassioned squalling vocal and rounding off the bottom is a crazy deep sub-bass”……(Future Music Nov 08)
"Royal Gala on the main Shambala Stage has a crunching electro and bass sound. Their singer Louise Barnell is dressed in a multicolored, one-piece spandex suit, her stage persona swaying between Bat for Lashes’ cool air of mystery and Bonnie Tyler’s pure Celtic balls. Barnell’s voice belts out strong over the Balkan beats and dancing jazz rhythms, and Royal Gala are a mysterious and feisty mix as the sun shines down." (Popmatters)
Royal Gala are a nine piece band, comprising Huge brass hooks, big bass-lines, dirty, raw, soulful vocals and infectious rhythms. Having formed at the back end of 2007 and consisting of members from several top underground uk acts they have recently worked with Lost Vagueness, The Electric Picnic (Ireland) Brick Lane Festival (London) Drop Beats Not Bombs (Birmingham) Planet Angel (London) Shambala Festival, Beatherder, Riverside Festival, Sheep Music Festival, Pama International, Neville Staples of the Specials, Zion Train, The Destroyers, DJ Derek and Manchesters mighty Unabombers among others. Playing a genre defying cocktail of Dirty Funk, Ska, Reggae/Dub, Breakbeat, Balkan beat, Latin and Brass laden orchestral grooves the band are moving from strength to strength, writing, recording, gigging and generally having a ball!

We're taking a break from gigging over the winter to concentrate on studio stuff, but I think we should be back in the spring. We'll certainly play Nottingham if anyone will have us...
