When The Presnyakov Brothers' first play, Terrorism, received its 2003 English language premier in London it was perceived as "dazzling apocalyptic farce" by the Guardian UK. When it hit New York in 2005, Time's critic Brent Brantley found Terrorism a "shrewd, scary comedy". In 2008, six years after its world premier at the Moscow Art Theatre, Terrorism will finally be performed in Toronto thanks to grass roots theatre company Royal Porcupine Productions and director Adam Bailey, who have choose the piece to be the second in their inaugural season.
Recently trend spotted by Toronto e-zine SheDoesTheCity.com for their site specific No Exit, Royal Porcupine Productions also received praise from BlogTo for showing "enough raw material and ambition…to make for an interesting debut season". Terrorism, like No Exit, is an examination of evil that draws surprising conclusions, a feature shared with RPP's third and final piece for 2008, Vinegar Tom. Structured like a violent version of La Ronde, Terrorism examines its subject mater as an infection that pollutes every aspect of daily life. Six snapshots make up the play, each happening in the same unnamed city on a day when the airport is closed due to some suspicious bags left on the runway. Surprisingly the script was written before 9-11 (or the Moscow theatre siege) as it hits many post 9-11 concepts; one of the darkest examples is when two widows discus murdering an unloved son-in-law as a pre-emptive strike.
Terrorism, written by The Presnyakov Brothers, Translation by Sasha Dugdale, will hit the boards at The Alchemy Studio Theatre (133 Tecumseth St. Toronto) previewing on April 17th, opening on the 18 and playing until the 26. Shows are at 8pm 17-19, 21 and 23-26 with a PWYC matinee at 2:30pm on Sunday the 20th. Preview costs $10, all other performances are $20. Tickets can be reserved by writing terrorismtickets@gmail.com
