   About Roy Hubbs
The Third Album by Roy Hubbs is set to be released soon!

Formed from the vestiges of the Minneapolis-based Lo-Fi Indy Rock group the Wobblies, Roy Hubbs began their search for Country purity in the late fall of 2000. The name "Roy Hubbs" comes from a pen name that Soley used when writing Country tunes, mainly because he thought the name sounded like the legends he had grown up with (one part Roy Acuff, one part Ernest Tubbs, perhaps?).

After several years, four releases, and three national tours playing Rock a/o Roll, both singer/guitarists Erik Soley and Andy Strom were a bit burnt out on the local rock scene. Since both had been writing Country material for a few years, and because they had listened to it since their youth, it seemed a natural place to turn for inspiration. They had already released an EP with the original Country tune "Right Time of the Night", featuring local steel wizard Joe Savage (Hookers-n-Blow, Ménage-A-Twang), and had a thirst for more.

Enter drummer/guitarist Sean Gilchrist, who actually answered an ad to replace the vacated skins slot in the Wobblies. He had recently acquired a taste for that Classic Country sound, and was very interested to see how things would work out.

Roy Hubbs was ready to put together a recording, and started collecting songs. Originally intending to record a 5 or 6-song EP, the 3 person writing team produced an excess of 20 songs, and were truly obligated to put together a full-length album. The ground was more fertile than expected. Much more.

Off to New Moon Studios in South Minneapolis to record with their old pal Brad Moe. Brad had recently acquired a 2" reel-to-reel machine (affectionately named "Big Bertha"), and had no idea what to do with his vintage 50's ribbon microphones that had collected dust for years. Roy Hubbs was MORE than happy to take advantage of this equipment, and recorded the basic tracks for the album in one day. Searching for that live-sounding, raw quality that many of their favorite artists had achieved, most of the album, later named "Essential", was recorded in less than 5 takes with few effects, and fewer overdubs.

In 2006 Roy Hubbs recorded their second full-length album with local recording veteran Rich Mattson (Minnesota Music Awards' "Producer of the Year") at his Sparta Studios location. Mostly recorded over a two-day eruption, this long overdue record features original songs from all three of the original members, and Clay Williams on lead and steel guitar. In the fall of 2006 Roy Hubbs was added to the roster of the legendary Minnesota indie-label, SMA Records. Roy Hubbs has just completed recording their third album with Rich at Sparta Studios and at Clay Williams' studio in St. Paul. It is set for release in the fall of 2009.

Since their inception, Roy Hubbs has played many shows in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area, including shows with local heavyweights Bellwether, The Front Porch Swingin' Liquor Pigs, The White Iron Band, Ol' Yeller, and The Copperheads, as well as playing shows at legendary local venues, such as the 400 Bar, 7th Street Entry, The Uptown, The Terminal, The Turf Club, Mayslacks, and headlining Lee's Liquor Lounge. Their rather eclectic Hard Country sound is very unique to the area, and spurned enough interest for Minnesota Public Radio to produce a story about the band and Fox 9 to invite them in studio to play on their morning show. They are also featured on the local stations KFAI, "The Current," and Cities 97, along with a growing number of international radio stations with a thirst for independent American country.

Hello!!

If you're around on Thursday, December 10th, we are playing a show at Mario's Keller Bar. I don't know if you've been there, but it's a very cool place. It's a comfortable space, the room sounds great and they have a stellar beer selection.

Also, we will be playing ALL NIGHT! We'll play some funky, bluesy, and soulful music. We'll project live video onto a 9 ft screen. We'll play some older material that hasn't been heard in awhile, as well as some brand new songs that've never been heard. All bets are off!! We'd love it if you'd come down and listen/party with us!

Here are the details:

Hope to see ya there!!!

Peace,
Elliot

Hey there!!

What's new in your world???????

I was going to go camping over the weekend, but this is definitely NOT camping weather. So me and some friends went to check out Dueling Pianos. Those guys are amazing - they can play just about any song that's been on the radio between 1950 and 2005.

Speaking of music, I wanted to let you know about a show we have @ Station 4 on Friday, October 16th. We are debuting a project called Sonic Transformations. It is a series of audio-visual performance pieces. The first one is called "AN OBJECT TO CRAVE". It features live music and visuals based on a short story about life, love, loss, fantasy, obsession and death.

Another group of mine, The Magnetrons, which plays an exciting and innovative Livetronica set (i.e. STS9, Disco Biscuits, The Histronic) will also be playing. The night will be full of creative, interesting, high-energy music, good drinks and good times.

Here's the info:

LOUDRAY

Sep 25 2009 5:31 PM

Just to let you know, LOUDRAY is still holding church on Thursdays.

We've been holding it down there for 10 months and as our 1 year anniversary of this residency approaches we are stepping up the revival.  For the past 8 months we've been joined by some of the finest musicians in town (Martin Devaney, Ric Lee, Glenn Hanson, Dave Babb, Jake Hyer, Kurt Froelich, Meg Ashling, Zach Gusa, Eric Larson, Jen Markey, Mother Banjo, Eliza Blue, Pete Bauer, just to name a few) but for the next 2 months, it's just going to be the classic LOUDRAY duo of Jon Stowell and Colin Anderson.  We will be digging deep into the back catalog of songs and bringing some new light through these old windows.

We have been doing these shows in the classic "unamplified" style as of late and look to continue that trend.

So, stop in for some fellowship and true acoustic music, and wash away the week with sweet, redeeming booze.

$2.75 select taps from 5-7pm!!!  Plenty of parking!!

Come on, isn't it time to slum it at the Dub!!

Hello!

I just wanted to stop by to say hello and give you a little update on what Blood Root Mother is up to! We will be recording an EP of new music in August, and we recently finished recording a live DVD. The DVD is currently unreleased and I actually just saw it for the first time a few days ago. It features the last two performances with Tony Ellis still alive, and some footage from the tribute show we played on the night of his funeral.

There are some cool covers, as well as some NEW music that will be on our upcoming EP. We're very excited about the new music and we'd like to share a sneak peak with you. Here's a video of a new tune called Run Bobby Run:

Hey Roy!

Since you seem to have good taste in music and live around the cities, I wanted to let you know about our show next Thursday, February 26th. We will be burning down the house at Trocaderos Nightclub in Minneapolis (107 3rd Ave N). If you've been there before, I don't have to tell you it's one of the best venues in the Twin Cities - classy atmosphere, great drinks, and the sound is always fantastic. We're gonna be recording live for a DVD, and this is definitely gonna be the coolest show we've done yet. So COME ON DOWN! The show is 18+, it starts at 9pm, and the cover is a mere $5.

Hope to see you there!

Peace,
Elliot
