The duo Roywilliam & Dean have been compared to other genuine singer/songwriter artists like John Mayer, Ray LaMontagne, Jack Johnson and Cheryl Crow. Their unique Suburban Acoustic™ style of music finds itself far enough away from the city for reflection, though near enough to feel its thumping heart. With just two main instruments (voice and guitar), the simple Americana songs of delightful complexity have little to hide behind. Their motto musically, is Go Naked!
As a pre-teen, Roywilliam’s parents divorced. His mother Pat and her four children eventually settled in Huntington, NY from Queens. Pat, a cabaret singer, turned down a job with Perry Como preferring to raise her family. Without much fatherly influence, Roywilliam set out to conquer the physical world. He learned the drums, played football, worked out on the still rings, got into trouble and found out he could sing and scat to just about any type of music. Some early favorite were The Stones, Stevie Wonder, Aretha, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, CSN&Y and The Beatles. Roywilliam, also an accomplished TV and Film actor, is currently appearing in the movie “Julie and Julia” with Meryl Streep and Amy Adams. He has also been seen in television’s Law and Order’s, Sex and the City, Curb Your Enthusiasm and the upcoming HBO series Boardwalk Empire.
Dean, born and raised in Huntington, came from a musical family. Everyone played an instrument. “Our house was a rehearsal studio with good food”. The big personality of the electric guitar lured in the sheltered 13 year-old. He missed much of the 10th grade holed up in his room dissecting the styles of Jeff Beck, Leslie West, Duane Allman, Billy Gibbons, Brian May and Ritchie Blackmore. By age 15, he was accomplished.
Although, their personalities are quite different, the outgoing and popular Roywilliam and the reserved, quiet Dean were introduced by a fellow musician. They found writing and playing together a joy.
After high school with a new band, Roywilliam and Dean performed 6 nights a week throughout the Northeast in Nightclubs and venues attracting thousands of fans. Their regional successes got the attention of famed promoter/manager Sid Bernstein and Atlantic Records. With the group RD Fury, they released an electric EP “X-Ray-ted”. This exposed Roywilliam's powerful voice but the message was still not quite getting across.
Something had to change. While playing an old Martin acoustic, Dean believed that if he could overcome the challenges of the heavier guitar strings, the inherent naked tone of the instrument, could stand out with a voice of its own. This would create the right environment for Roywilliam’s vocals, words and melodies to shine. “His voice is such a standout. It doesn’t need a chorus of background singers to move you”. Also, by stripping away the interference and distractions created by over production and processing, something exciting began to emerge.
In 2009, Roywilliam and Dean released the EP “Never Look Back”. They called the streamlined music and lyrics of joy, pain and struggle, Suburban Acoustic™. Live, their fresh, big persona and humor set a different entertainment standard for singer/songwriters.

So RW&D suffered a 10 hour ordeal to audition for AGT yesterday. All that waiting for a 90 second audition and guess what. They liked us!! We will not know if we will be called back until January. So we will move ahead until then.
