Nick- Star Wars, The Beastie Boys, the 1986 New York Giants, Pot Noodle, James Brown… and we just discovered table-football the other week, and that could become a big influence.
Smoove – Porn, Lager, Vinyl.
Andy – Old Peculiar, 80’s Thrash Metal.
Ozzi - Personally: alternative hip hop, electronica, old school, weird stuff, post hardcore rock
Sounds Like
Andy – A bass guitar.
Ozzi - Funk with elements of hip hop, soul, jazz. Grooves basically.
Smoove – Paper cuts between your toes meets a fish monger’s wife.
Nick - …our press release goes…
It’s a live band playing Hip-Hop, it’s Soul-Funk with samples, it’s tight mayhem on stage, it’s Chic meets Captain Caveman.
Rubberneck play classic James Brown style funk, laced with break-beat rap and a touch of insanity.
Smoove - Smoove is the all singing, all dancing, rapping human beatbox, production god DJ scratchy-turntablism MAN OF FUNK around these parts.
When he's not rocking out with Rubberneck, he DJs in every single bar, everywhere, all at the same time.
He also owns all records, ever, including two copies of the really rare ones.
Nick - After starring in the film "Clueless" as the kid with the "Marvin The Martian" skateboard, Nick decided to launch a musical career which would take him all over the globe, to the worlds biggest venues, with show business' biggest names.
When this didn't happen he decided instead to form Rubberneck - which was better anyway.
He also GETS DOWN with chill out merchants Jazz Girl.
Andy - Easily the best one in the band, Andy began playing the bass two years before he was born.
He was brought up in North America by various species of wild animals before being sold to the white slave trade.
He later invented the Electric Bass guitar and also Country Music, for which he apologizes.
Ozzi - He's Oscar Cassidy, the funky drummer.
He gets through far more Funk in a normal day than most people.
What's more, he doesn't just pop to the shop for a little bag of Funk to keep him going for the rest of the week.
No, instead he goes direct to the Funk Wholesalers for big boxes of Funk, and even then he still runs out in a few hours.
I'm flippin' out from all the free giftcards that Macys is sending me for giving them my email address! I finally found out that for every new email address you send them, you get a $500 GiftCard until July!!! HURRY and get as many as you can before they stop this!
BRIGHTBLACK MORNING LIGHT aren't from a particular place, although the singing is by two friends from Alabama, where Southern music, from Sun Ra to Emmy Lou Harris, to the very beginnings of delta blues is a reality. So many city musicians posture blues, even accents from the American South, but few actually live that reality. N.Shineywater & R. Hughes, who formed BRIGHTBLACK MORNING LIGHT in Northern California, after leaving Alabama for their first tour, opening for Will Oldham, do live that reality.
In the summer of 2006, BRIGHTBLACK MORNING LIGHT shared show bills with VASHTI BUNYAN, at her San Francisco debut performance, with OS MUTANTES at their debut San Francisco performance, with RAMBLIN' JACK ELLIOTT at a rural music gathering curated by Shineywater, as well as ESPERS, MOJAVE 3, DEVENDRA BANHART, VETIVER, FEATHERS, and former LUNGFISH member, DANIEL A.I.U. HIGGS.
For their touring Europe debut, they've brought along Northern California folk singer MARIEE SIOUX. "Mariee is full blood Piaute, not Sioux, her ancestors walked the desert & sang their prayers & thoughts, I love, love, love her writing," says Shineywater.
