LA MOVIDA "An Exploration of Movement from Danza Mexika to Interactive Media Urban Dance"
La Movida celebrates bodies in motion while exploring the need for movement on cultural and political levels. This show brings together 14 women artists from the San Diego area who have created original dance pieces that use folklore and tradition fused with contemporary styles in order to find today's unique voice. The word movida in Spanish literally means "action" while also connoting in some contexts a "slick" or "tricky" move. The movidas seen in this performance, therefore, invoke the spirit of movement as a form of strategic resistance, active growth, and celebration. Performed during Women's History Month, the artists have created women-centered work that focuses on telling the stories of women. The diversity of dance styles presented in La Movida is impressive. The performances range from Danza Mexika to contemporary modern dance, hip-hop, capoeira, Classical Indian dance, Puerto Rican bomba, flamenco, samba, ballet folklorico, Mexican son jarocho, and a piece integrating dance and interactive media. Some pieces will include the use of spoken word and poetry, live percussionists, singers and musicians, and one piece has been created by a mother-daughter team. Improvisation serves as inspiration for some dancers while others have carefully crafted pieces to show the relationship between distinct forms of dance that have descended from a similar root. The contributors have varied and extensive backgrounds in dance. For example, grace shinhae jun as the director for her company bkSOUL has an MFA in choreography from Sarah La
