Growing up in northern Europe in the 70's and 80's, his interest in music came at an early age. After interviewing his family members I discovered that he could be found listening to Prokofiev, Tchaikovsky and the Beatles at the tender age of 2 years old. "He would be completely hypnotized as if he had been transported to another world, but only his body was left behind", was one of the quotes heard.
Learning the piano at 7 and then 'cello at 8 his love of music quickly developed and by the age of 11 he was regularly performing as a member of the Royal Opera Houses' children's chorus directed by Jean Povey and Keith Walters. Taking up the bass guitar in his teens, he became interested in jazz and rock music, regularly performing at local halls with other up and coming musicians.
"At this time I was in about 10 different bands and it was hard work just keeping up with everyone's rehearsal schedule", he says.
Eventually being accepted to study music at London University, under the tutelage of celebrated composer Edward Gregson, he became more and more interested in composition and his ears were opened to increasingly exotic sounds and compositional ideas. But it was a chance meeting and introduction with legendary Italian DJ Daniele Baldelli by Faze Action co founder Simon Lee that sent him in his current direction.
"We sat down together and listened to some of Daniele's tapes from the days when he would DJ at those cosmic parties in the late 70's and early 80's and I was just transported by the sounds. It was a bit more than just dance music. It had drama in it. I have always been drawn to music that has drama"
So it seems that some of those experiments and ideas will finally see the light of day. With the release of "The Reception", an organic, disco infused track with three parts including dubbed out guitars, analogue synthesizers and a melody that most British people of a certain age will surely recognize, we look forward to hearing more from the vaults of Rudy's Midnight Machine
