After an opening performance for famed movie producer Spike Lee’s hip-hop movie “Bamboozled” in 2001, Spike pulled Rukus aside backstage and said “You were tight man…you’ve got a bright future”.
Fast forward to 2009 and Houston, Texas, where the 26 year old MC has already redefined critics perception of the south with his first LP entitled “Home Grown” (2005). Defining his style as “neo-soul-rap”, Rukus fused spoken word, a smooth delivery, and witty commentary on his first release. Comparisons to Common and Kanye abounded after the album which featured the hit single “African Queen” received airplay in the U.S., U.K., Nigeria, and Ghana and was chosen as part of a compilation album with proceeds to aid in the fight against poverty. In 2007, he extended his fan reach by taking on the task of remixing John Mayer’s “Continuum” album (http://www.myspace.com/thejohnmayerproject) and received critical acclaim and mention on Mayer’s official website.
With his support growing, Rukus has released his latest project “Can’t Forget” (2008) which features an eclectic mix of funk, soul, and classic hiphop with the gritty edge that only a Texas artist could provide. Fans and critics alike marvel at “Everyday” which has proven to be one of the most inspiring songs written for women in the past decade and was 50 in HipHopCritics Top 100 Songs of 2008. Look for this talented young star to continue making waves in 2009 as his exposure ventures outside Texas and to a radio near you.
