Founded in 2001, Little Rock bluegrass band Runaway Planet evolved out of a long-time friendship between members and a mutual love for traditional string-band music. Their music is a mix of hard-driving bluegrass, three-part harmonies, complex arrangements and original songs. The debut CD, "No Part Of Nothin'," is currently receiving airplay within the United States and throughout the world through the support of community and public radio programming. Drawing from traditional influences like Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs and the Stanley Brothers, they are also inspired by more progressive bluegrass bands like The Country Gentlemen, The Seldom Scene and New Grass Revival. With an ever-growing schedule, Runaway Planet is winning over new fans from traditional bluegrass lovers to younger fans new to the genre.
The members of Runaway Planet harbor a wealth of talent, experience and credits. The group is especially proud of their work with the Arkansas Educational Television Network (AETN) in helping produce a documentary of the First Annual Arkansas Acoustic Festival. They have shared the stage with such bluegrass greats as Ricky Skaggs, Sam Bush, and The Del McCoury Band. Members of Runaway Planet have been featured on both radio and television including "Good Morning Arkansas," an episode of “Trading Spaces” and "Spotlight On," an hour-long documentary featuring well-known songwriters and musicians.
Awards and accolades are also included in Runaway Planet’s repertoire. In its first year, the group entered and won the 2002 Arkansas Times Musicians Showcase and was named runner-up in the Arkansas Acoustic Festival, featuring Nickel Creek. In 2003 they became members of the Arkansas Arts on Tour, a program of the Arkansas Arts Council and continue to be on their roster of notable artists. Runaway Planet has played varied and eclectic festivals including the Arkansongs Music Festival, several appearances at Arkansas’ largest festival, Riverfest, and the South by Southwest Music Conference in Austin, Texas. In January 2005 the band was honored to perform during the official opening of the Clinton Presidential Center and Library held in Little Rock, Arkansas.
Runaway Planet is known for their uncompromising musicianship, gripping vocal harmonies and rousing live shows. Its members are well-versed in many genres yet the love of traditional American string-band music gives these guys the energy that has earned them a reputation for delivering a hard-driving, highly danceable show. Runaway Planet has established an ever-growing following of fans who are hooked on their foot-stompin’ originals and distinctive flavor of traditional favorites.
Runaway Planet is currently in the studio working on their highly anticipated sophomore release.
